El Campo is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, about 30 miles east of Austin. The population was 17,584 as of the 2010 census. The town is named for General Antonio El Campo y Costilla who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Texas. Knives were first used by Native Americans to hunt game. By 1836, knives had become common among Texans and were often used to collect tolls from travelers on the Santa Anna River. In 1849, El Campo became the county seat of Hudspeth County and began to grow as a commercial center due to its location at the junction of two important wagon roads. The discovery of oil in 1901 led to increased production in Hudspeth County and El Campo grew into one of the largest oil towns in America. Because knife manufacturing was an important part of this industry, knife manufacturers such as D&C Cutlery Company, Bushnell Knife & Tool Co., Richards Knife Manufacturing Co., Stanley & Sons Inc., and Hogue Knives Ltd.) built their downtowns around where today’s businesses are located including the old courthouse which still stands today (now known as the First Baptist Church). In 1937, when World War II began, many men from El Campo enlisted in the military and many local companies produced equipment for troops on Battle Mountain near Austin. After hostilities ended in 1945, many people left El Campo for other parts of Texas because there wasn't much economic opportunities available here after war ended. However, some residents decided to stay and start their own families while others moved back into town after finding new jobs or started new businesses here. The current community was founded when Reverend John Sisson moved his family from Illinois settled on land west sideof Elm Creek that forms what is now Elm Park Ave.(northwest corner Elm Street) Sisson organized a group called "El campers" who helped build churches and housing along Elm Park Avenue during early years until World War II when most people left due to lack of opportunity; however some have stayed ever since

El Campo, Texas is a small town located in Hidalgo County, Texas. It was founded in 1869 by the Llewellyn family and named after the El Cámpora Creek. The first post office at El Campo was established in 1874. In 1905, the community amalgamated with other towns to form nearby Fort Worth. The population of El Campo decreased significantly between 1920 and 1940, but increased significantly since 1990 due to migration from Mexico and other parts of Southwestern America. The town's history can be traced back to 1869 when the Llewellyn family arrived in Hidalgo County from Tennessee with their cattle and horses. They built a log cabin on a peninsula overlooking the creek that became known as "El Campo." The first white residents were Camilo Valdez and his wife Anna who arrived in 1870; Manuel Valdez followed them two years later. By 1872, there were six families living at "El Campo." When General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna became president of Mexico on April 20,1886, he ordered all American citizens out of Mexico City for fear they would help Ulysses S Grant overthrow him. This led to an exodus of Mexican citizens from California into Texan Territory; many of these people settled at "El Campo" where they started new lives among friends and neighbors. The Llewellyns remained at "El Campo" until it was abandoned following a flood that destroyed their home on November 10th, 1886. For several years after that event local farmers used hogskins as flooring because no mud or straw could be found downstream to rebuild their homes using. A few weeks later construction began on what would become Fort Worth's first public school which opened September 1st, 1889 undersequent name: Stroud School District No 2 (later called Fort Worth Independent School District). At this point Ft Worth had only 3 blocks wide compared to today’s city limits with over 100 blocks! Classes continued for one year before being moved across the river to what is now Wise Elementary School where students still attend today despite having been in & around downtown Ft Worth for over 100 years! In 1905 the community amalgamated with other towns near Fort Worth when it was decided by leaders within both communities that “the interests of each town should be considered above those of any others” resulting in more growth within El Campo than anywhere else within those towns combined during that time period- even though outside influences such as oil exploration had Playfair vie for attention amongst officials within both Communities throughout much of this decade- something which eventually paid off handsomely for ElCampo once Cowboy country boomed thanks largely to development along Interstate 35 southward beginning just prior WWII! However another important factor working towards growth & prosperity for locals during this time period centered around education – specifically finding ways not just for individuals residing within either Community periphery but also central ELcampO property (such as Henry Clay High School) accessto quality educational opportunities available beyond simply attending/participating locally while still maintaining close relationships/ Connections& Cooperation w/ surrounding Communities thru intervillage sports teams (& organizations), club activities (xeroxing old photos/pictures then mailing backcrossy originals lotsusome times!), religious services (& various other types events), fundraisers (& many more!) all helping contribute ultimately leading TO THE GROWTH OF THIS CITY OVER TIME!
