It has been reported that the first gun sights in El Campo, Texas were installed by Captain John C. Smith in 1892. At that time, this town was located in Hudspeth County and the only means of observing one's surroundings was through a telescope. With the arrival of railroads and new settlements in the area, guns began to be transported between these locations and so accurate sighting became necessary. It is also believed that Captain Smith may have developed or patented a sighting device which allowed for quick target acquisition while hunting game. After his death, his son-in-law, Hiram Maxim developed this device and it became popularized among hunters throughout America. As gun sights continued to become more prevalent in America over the years, El Campo saw an increase in its population as farmers relocated to this area seeking out better land opportunities. El Campo is a small town in Webb County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. El Campo is located in east-central Webb County on U.S. Highway 380 and State Highway 281. The first people to live here were Native Americans who hunted game and gathered plants and fruits along the San Gabriel River close to present day Campo Road. In 1836, Ulysses S. Grant's army passed through this area while seeking refuge from Mexican forces lines near Nacogdoches; General Sam Houston camped here for a few days before continuing his march northward across the Llano Estacado into Mexico City. In 1859, when Fort Worth was founded as a city by two American soldiers named James Bowie and James McNary,El Campo became known as "The Colony" because it was one of only a few towns in Texas that had been granted city status by the US government during its early years of development." El Campo remained an agricultural community until about 1930 when oil discoveries began occurring around here." Oil production increased rapidly in this area after World War II with new wells being drilled all over Texas but little attention paid to El Campo until 1972 when state legislators made it one of four communities within the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan statistical area that would receive special treatment under then-new regulations designed to stimulate economic growth within centralDallas." It wasn’t until 2000 when local leaders decided it was time to make some changes including increasing public transportation options Sponsorizing arts and cultural events throughout the year having evening concerts outdoors or inside venues available Allocating more money specifically for infrastructure projects such as water systems beautification And making sure that residents have access to quality education which includes several high school campuses within walking distance ." Today El Campo continues to be an agricultural center with corn, wheat, soybeans, oats and other crops being grown as well as cattle (mainly beef), horses and sheep raising operations

El Campo, Texas was founded in 1835 by the Spanish and Mexican Borderlands settlers. The town formed a part of the Alamo Missions District, which was established in 1836. In 1840, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna ordered the abandonment of El Campo, but its residents refused to leave and there was little resistance from Mexican authorities. After Santa Anna's defeat at the Battle of Palo Alto on September 6,1846, most of the inhabitants of El Campo fled to Mexico City. A few people returned after San Antonio's siege began on October 2 and soon afterwards most of what remained of El Campo surrendered to US forces on October 10. Aftermath: Today only a select few remnant citizens remain in El Campo; most have moved away since then. The courthouse has been abandoned for years and is now used as a storage facility. Some buildings still stand including the post office which is now a library.
The Battle of El Campo, fought on October 15, 1846, was a battle between United States troops and Mexican forces. The Americans lost with only about 50 casualties.
