El Campo is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first people to live in El Campo were French Canadian fur traders who arrived in 1827. The town was named after José de la Hoz y Valenzuela, 3rd Marquis of El Paso and head of the Mexican army that fought against Texan independence during the Texas Revolution (1836-1845). The railroad reached El Campo in 1881 and it became a popular summer resort for Texans. A post office was established here on July 20, 1893. In 1922, El Campo became an independent municipality with its own government and school system. In 1930, construction began on the nearby Round Rock Airport which served El Campo until 1971 when it was replaced by Travis Air Force Base. Today, most residents commute to Austin or Round Rock for work or pleasure. El Campo's history can be traced back to 1827 when FrenchCanadian fur traders settled near what is now downtown ElCampo and named their new community "Jose de la Hoya y Valenzuela". In 1850s as Mexico struggled under American occupation two men came up with a plan to break away from Mexico - Manuel Ortiz and Antonio Navarro - they pooled their resources and founded San Antonio del Rio Grande Railway Company west of San Antonio del Rio Grande into what is now Hudspeth County; it would later become known as Texaco Incorporated (now ChevronTexaco) because of its role inMexican oil production during this time period across several states including Hudspeth County. They laid down tracks through Ranchos de Santa Anna Chávez & Gonzales east of present day Floresville that crossed Knob Creek where ranch hands built homes thereabouts before being abandoned circa 1910-1920 due to environmental concerns about water usage caused by crude oil exploration operations then ongoing within 100 yards of this creek today; some structures still remain standing today: old dirt road bridge over creek about 10 feet long/3 feet wide & original footbridge over creek about 12 feet long/4 inches wide
El Campo was founded in 1846 by the Padre José de Jesús Arroyo, who named it for his hometown of El Cámara, in the province of Valladolid. Ranchos were developed here and cattle became a majorstay of the local economy. In 1881, director James Fenton bought land at El Campo and erected a small butpretory on its boundaries; this structure served as the first Methodist church in Texas. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century, with construction of churches, schools, hospitals, stores and other infrastructure building up around it. A fire destroyed most of the downtown business district in 1907, but El Campo quickly rebuilt and emerged as one of Texas' leading cities. The city experienced another boom after World War II brought an influx of workers to help rebuild post-war America. By 2000, however, El Campo's population had shrunk to less than 1,000 people due to efforts by developers to redevelop their land into luxury housing estates.
