The town was founded by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and named for him after his victory over Mexican forces at El Paso on October 3, 1829. In 1876, John Wesley Powell became interested in exploring the Rocky Mountains and began traveling through Central America. When he reached El Paso on July 9, 1877, he hired local farmers to drive his horses upriver to explore what lay ahead. After finding no trails leading eastward beyond Pecos River, Powell turned back and returned home that night with news of his findings: A mountain range had been found! He named this mountain peak Rocky Mountain Peak after himself and El Campo became known as "Powell's Station". When new railroad lines were being constructed through Central Texas in the late 19th century, many businesses relocated from Chihuahua toEl Campo because of their close proximity to railroads and easy access to markets outside of Chihuahua. One such business was Hrdy & Sons Hardware which moved from Pecos Valley into downtown El Campo during this time period In 1957-58 when Interstate 35 opened up new routes throughout Central Texas - including passing through town - much of the agricultural land aroundEl Campo changed hands because it became available for development or sale near I-3500 . Today much of downtown ElCampo still operates as a farm market while portions have been redeveloped into residential neighborhoods .

El Campo, Texas (population 5,500) is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. It is the county seat of Hudspeth County and it was founded in 1836 by Anglo-Mexican settlers who were driven out of Mexico City by the Mexican War of Independence. The name "El Campo" comes from Spanish "el campo" meaning "the field". El Campo has been served as the county seat since 1854. The town was platted on October 16, 1836, by General Antonio López de Santa Anna and Captain Fernando de la Cueva. The site that would become El Campo was chosen for its location at the crossroads of two routes leading to San Antonio. At first there were only a few families living hereabouts; but within a short time an estimated 10 to 12 hundred people had gathered around what would later be known as downtown El Campo. The first courthouse was built in 1840 and soon afterwards began serving as the center of government for Hudspeth County. A schoolhouse also soon stood heretofore and now serves as part of the Hudspeth County Museum Complex; it is also home to one of the most complete collections of hand-carved stone artifacts in Texas history. In 1861 Confederate forces attacked Fort Sam Houston while they were trying to take control of New Braunfels upstream from El Campo; this attack failed and no one was injured or killed but many horses were captured including three cannons which ended up at Houston's Arsenal. The post office opened on October 15th, 1836 and functioned until 1865 when it became part of Fort Worth via annexation from McAllen due to population growth there - however with no mail service being established until 1893 all outgoing correspondence had to be sent through Austin before being delivered back east via stagecoach just like present day! A cotton gin was erected in 1865 probably financed largely by local slave owners looking for an alternative means to get their hands on some much needed cotton during this difficult time period when prices for cotton were soaring across America both northward and southward...a fact that again points out just how important agriculture remained throughout much of these times! Among those early pioneers who made their mark at Downtown El Campo are: James Eads (1811-1888), David Hogg (1796-1875), John Pemberton (1798-1872), George Patton (1865-1944)and his son Ulysses S Grant Patton Jr.(1871-1946).
