El Campo is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Corpus Christi–Houston Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1881 by settlers from Decatur, Alabama. They named it after acierto campo (Spanish for "meadow"), which they found near the Sabine River. A post office was established in El Campo in 1882 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. A grain elevator and mill were built on the north side of Main Street in 1903. These structures remain standing today as part of the town's infrastructure. In 1916, El Campo became an independent municipality and incorporated as a city. In 1922, El Campo annexed parts of Hockley County to form its new municipal boundaries. In 1938, all but one of Hudspeth County's municipalities were annexation into El Campo except for San Angelo which seceded to become a separate municipality known as Arlington Heights; this change left Hudspeth County with six municipalities: Bowie, Dallas-Fort Worth Airport (now Grapevine), Cotulla-Floresville, Fort Bend County (now Houston), Luling-Mission Viejo and San Angelo-Lubbock City Council Chambers would later merge to form Austin–Round Rock Municipal Complex on November 5th 1978 Revised Laws Of Texas Article 4 Section 9). Today only Bowie Municipality remains within Hudspeth County with its seat located at League City

The town of El Campo was founded in 1849 by the Lipan Apache Indians. The town quickly grew, and soon had a population of over 100 people. In the 1870s, El Campo became a center for cattleraising and agriculture. The town continued to grow until it was destroyed in a fire in 1903. Today, the remnants of El Campo are still visible, and its history can be learned through its historic buildings and local attractions. El Campo is located in Hudspeth County, Texas, on the banks of the Brazos River. It is bordered by Austin to the east, Lubbock to the south-west, Corpus Christi to the north-west, and San Antonio to the north-east. The climate in El Campo is humid subtropical with average monthly temperatures ranging from 67–79 degrees Fahrenheit (19–26 degrees Celsius). Most rainfall occurs during winter months when there's around 20 inches (50 cm) of rain per month. The Lipan Apache Indian tribe first settled in what is now ElCampo Creek Township on November 3rd 1849 following their escape from Fort Bliss Prison near Dallas. They named their new community after Ranchito de las Flores - an estate where they were confined for eight years as punishment for raiding American farms nearFort Worth three years earlier. At first only 5 men lived at Ranchito de las Flores; but after several hundred head of cattle were sent here from Comanche Country due to increased demand for beef among Americans during Reconstruction Era (1868-1897), more settlers arrived until by 1850 there were around 200 people living at Ranchito de las Flores with 1 store, 2 taverns & 10 homes/homes being built later that year according: one post office opened on February 16th 1850 & another on October 12th 1851 There was also 1 school open in 1850 serving grades 1-12 as well as 100 head of horses that year which helped with farming efforts this farmstead would eventually house over 10 000 cows over time! In 1881 local rancher Wm Hargrave donated 4 acres (16 ha) northwest of present day Villa Clara Boulevard within what is now known as ranchland owned by Don Fernando Basura which includes acreage along both sides of Rio Grande before it crossed into Hudspeth County . beginnings appear Beginnings date back even further though little evidence exists…………………………………..continued
El Campo comes from the Spanish word "el campo" meaning "the field". The original settlers in this area were the Hays family. El Campo was founded in 1881 by John Hays and his brother, James Hays. The first town hall was built in 1883. The town of El Campo grew rapidly after it was incorporation into the County of Medina on January 1, 1886. In 1915, El Campo became a city with a population of over 100,000 people.
