El Campo is a town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,446 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Odessa–San Angelo Metropolitan Statistical Area. El Campo is located in the Midland Hills region of the central Texas Hill Country and lies on the San Antonio River near its confluence with the Cosas River. The first people to live in what is now El Campo were Native Americans who hunted and collected game around this area for food. A mission was established here in 1827 by Father José de Jesús Miranda, who also founded Nacogdoches Mission in 1828. In 1840, General Zachary Taylor named this place San Fernando del Rio after his victory over Mexico at Palo Alto during the Mexican-American War. A post office called Rancho Fonda was established here in 1875, and it remained active until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1906, because of railroad development within miles of El Campo, a new post office called Ranch Road became operational; it continued operations until 1959. In 1912–13 Padre Manuel López opened a small Catholic school that served students from nearby towns like New Braunfels and Vista Verde as well as children from surrounding rural areas outside of El Campo limits. El Campo, Texas is a census-designated place in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,958 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. The first inhabitants of what is now El Campo were European settlers who arrived during the 1820s. They began to arrive in increasing numbers as cattle drives traveled through this area and other parts of Texas. By 1845, about 100 people lived in El Campo. In 1865, a post office was established at El Campo and it remained in operation until 1896. In that year, it was renamed camp after General Zachary Taylor's headquarters at Huntsville, Alabama. The town of El Campo proper was founded on November 5th, 1897 by Hemanus Wride and James Biddle Frye with support from ranchers Charles Goodyear and John Troup. At its peak membership had reached 350 people but fell soon afterward due to limited economic opportunities and the cost of living in Austin (the capital). Some early residents of El Campo included Dragan Djakovski (1802-1885), George Addison (1799-1864), Nicholas Cramer (1788-1860), Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1715), Johann Georg Backhausen (1775-1827) and Friedrich Engels (1783-1856). In 1898 Isaac Asimov wrote an article for "Astounding" magazine entitled "A Pioneer Village", about his visit to El Campo two years earlier while writing a book about pioneer life in the Lone Star State. After World War II ended there were increased efforts to return veterans back home so El Campo became one of many concentrations of American soldiers returning home following the war throughout Southwest Asia, including Kuwait where over 120 American servicemen were stationed when hostilities ended in 1991 CE; however no permanent resident community has been established since then as most returned home within four months or less after their discharge or parole notice had been received by U.S military authorities ElCampoo@aol dot com
