Edinburg, Texas is a small town in southern Texas that is the county seat for Hidalgo County. The population was 5,539 at the 2010 census. It has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa), with hot, humid summers and mild to cool winters. Edinburg is located on the west side of Hidalgo County and it straddles the border of Starr County to the east. The first people to live in what is now Edinburg came from northern Mexico in the early 1800s. They were farmers who grew corn and other vegetables. In 1836, they founded a town called San Marcos de Tolosa on their land near present-day Arlington Cemetery. The name change may have been due to Indian attacks during that time. In 1848, General Antonio López de Santa Anna led an army through Hidalgo County and captured Edinburg without battle or casualty. He renamed it San Marcos de Tolosa after his new capital city in Mexico City. A post office was established at Edinburg in 1851, and by 1865, it had grown into a thriving community with around 1,000 residents. The railroad arrived in 1870, making Edinburg one of the earliest towns in Starr County when it went online that year. Edinburg, Texas is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 228 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The community began as a cattle ranching village founded by George W. Hudspeth in 1867. It received its first school in 1870 and its first post office in 1872. In 1899, it became the county seat of Hudspeth County after being designated by a white majority county commissioners election as the "borough" of Austin; this designation was short-lived and reverted to Hudspeth County status following annexation by Austin in 1901. A new courthouse was built downtown in 1911 and named for Judge James J. Cooke (1854-1938), who had been influential in developing Edinburg into an agricultural center during the early years of American Oil Company operations there. The town's nickname, "TheBirthplace of Reason," comes from this tradition: Cooke purchased land near Edinburg for a water tower that would serve as a symbol of cityhood within the oilpatch town limits but never completed due to funding shortages during World War I; when war ended and resources improved, he donated the structure to local officials as a civic center and educational institution on behalf of their citizens. Edinburg experienced rapid growth following World War II with numerous industries coming online: aluminum production started at Alcoa here in 1945; Texaco established itself with its headquarters here from 1942 until 1963; Lockheed Martin began operations at nearby Fort Worth Air National Guard Base from 1947 until 1995 – all while maintaining significant portions of their facilities hereabouts; Lubbock also saw substantial growth thanks to Little Elm Refining Company’s refinery opening on North Lamar Boulevard just south of town soon after World War II – becoming one of Texas’ leading refineries despite numerous boycotts against products brought into state by then-President Harry S Truman because they were considered unpatriotic (Lubbock still holds that distinction today). In recent years, much development has occurred around Interstate 35W – including major new apartment developments close to downtown along what used to be Route 66 thoroughfare – although much remains undone or undiscovered inside what once comprised one large bedroom community surrounded by cattle pastures, farms and single-family homes dating back more than 100 years!
Edinburg is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 6,858 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Midland County. The town site of what is now Edinburg was platted in 1873 by George W. Brown and James Hogg as part of the land deal that led to creation of Midland County. The name "Edinburg" first appeared on a map in 1876. The city was founded on November 12, 1881 by Vice President Henry Cisneros with the help of $5000 from Andrew Carnegie and other capitalists under the banner "The New City for America." In 1907, J.B. Morrell platted what became known as Old Town Edinburg which included much later development eastward along Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard including what is now downtown's Morrell Plaza shopping center and many other businesses and residences until it was annexed into the city limits in 1959 (see annexation). On October 1, 1916 Clyde Aiken became Mayor after being elected to succeed his father who had served two terms as Mayor since 1912; this made him mayor-elect for one year only before he took office on October 2 following a special election held to fill that term vacated by Abe Bearden who had become Lieutenant Governor during World War I. At age 30 years old Aiken becomes youngest mayor ever when he inauguralizes his term on October 3rd while also becoming first African American Male Mayor of Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan area when he assumes office at Market Square Park just east of downtown Dallas proper - thus making him one out of four African American mayors in Texas history prior to that point! He served until his death effective January 15th, 1951 due to natural causes within days after having been reelected unanimously! Akin's predecessor from 1914-1916 Abe Bearden remained longest serving individual mayor with three terms starting May 1st through December 31st each year followed closely by Clyde Aiken with two terms starting On or about January 1st following an election campaign season lasting over 100 days each year
