Edinburg, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 102,853. It is the county seat of Hudspeth County and was founded on October 1, 1836 by Judge John Fenton and his wife Maria Edwards Fenton as the town known as Fort Worth. The name "Edinburg" comes from two early Hispanic place names: Encinas y Edinburgo (Castilian) and Acacio y Edinburgo (Aramaic). The first rifle stocks were made here in 1852 by Isaac Newton Payne & Sons Rifle Works. For over 60 years this rifle company has been manufacturing top-quality rifles for Texans all across the state. In 1923, G&P Firearms Company became part of Colt Corporation and continued to make rifles under that name into the 1970s. On December 5, 1837, a public meeting was held to discuss plans for a new town in what is now Hudspeth County. A committee composed of Mayor James Polk and members of the Edinburg Methodist Church voted to name the new community after John C. Frémont, who led an expedition into Mexico in 1846 and helped gain independence for Texas. In 1860, during the American Civil War, Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered at Fort Pickett near Edinburg; this event is commemorated by a large Confederate Memorial Park located within the limits of present-day Hudspeth County
