Edinburg, Texas is a small city in the U.S. state of Texas that was founded in 1873. The population was 5,600 at the 2010 census,[1] and it is the county seat for Hudspeth County. It is located about 60 miles (96 km) east of Austin and about 25 miles (40 km) west of Dallas. The town began as a farming community on the banks of the Trinity River, which flows through it. In 1876, James Waddy settled in Edinburg and soon became its first mayor. He built a sawmill on what is now Main Street and named it after himself, Edinburg Works. Waddy also founded the hutchinson School District No. 1 in 1907;[2] today it maintains an elementary school and two high schools, one public and one private.[3] In 1915, Clyde Tombaugh discovered radioactivity while prospecting for coal near Eldorado Canyon outside present-day Edinburg;[4] within months he had developed local interest in electricity by transmitting short bursts of energy over short distances using a hand held transmitter called a “tombaughite” from his home to friends at Fort Worth.[5][6] Radio pioneer Edwin Armstrong set up shop in nearby Arlington to build transmitters used by Tombaugh.[7][8] Armstrong helped found American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T) in 1983,[9][10][11][12]: Today AT&T operates much of East Texas' high-speed data network as well as amateur radio services from its antennas across central Texas
Edinburg is a city in southern Texas, United States. It was founded in 1836 by Major John C. Hudspeth and other settlers from Louisiana as the seat of Hudspeth County. The city's name comes from the Seminole word "edinburia," meaning "fortress." The first post office was established in 1836, and the first store was built in 1840. The population of Edinburg grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s, due to its location on the San Antonio River and its agricultural potential. By 1850, Edinburg had over 6,000 residents. However, during the Mexican-American War (1846-1847), Edinburg came under siege by Confederate forces; it was only later that it recovered sufficiently to become a major railroad center. In 1872, when Austin became the capital of Texas, Edinburg became part of Travis County. From then until 1959, when it joined Cameron County, Edinburg remained an unincorporated community within Travis County. In 1959, however, it became an incorporated city with its own government under local jurisdiction.
