Edinburg, Texas is a town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The name "Edinburg" was given to the community by General Sam Houston on November 3, 1836. The town site was laid out by James Hance and his brother-in-law James Bowie on October 10, 1837. They named it for one of their fathers who had served as a scouting lieutenant with distinction in Mexico during the Mexican War (1846-48). Ibid The first post office in Edinburg opened in 1839. By 1840, there were nine businesses in operation. The cotton gin started construction in 1842 and became operational that year. A hotel and two stores were built soon after; the first store being called "the White House". Not long after becoming an incorporated town, Edinburg hosted its first meeting of a city council on December 6th of that year with Wm Hogsett serving as chairman and Ralph Wilkinson as secretary

That year saw many advances for Edinburg including construction of a water system that became one oftexas' first municipals; incorporation of industries such as printing presses and lumberyards; annexation byHouston; and growth in education with completion of several schools including Eastwood School District #1's high school building which opened on July 1st 1912 In 1925, prohibition led to social upheaval when local restaurant owners refused to serve customers who were carrying alcoholic beverages This led to violence that continued through much of 1925 before subsiding by 1926 The bans against alcohol also led to prohibition gardeners growing large quantities of grapes for wine production which would be transported into Austin for sale
