Edinburg is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1853 by John Waddell and named for General James Hogg, who had fought in the Mexican War. In 1881, Edinburg joined the city of Austin as it grew to become one of its most populous municipalities. After annexation by Austin in 1911, Edinburg's growth slowed and it remains a small agricultural community today. Edinburg is located on US Highway 183 around milepost 362. It lies east of Interstate 35 and west of US Highway 290. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Edinburg has a humid subtropical climate (Cfa). According to local historian Lamar Hillman, when first settled by Texans in 1853, Edinburgh was “a little log cabin with five or six rooms” on what is now rural Hudspeth County Road 662 east of present day downtown Edinburg. The grantees were led by Captive John Waddell (1802-1860), son of Captive George Waddell who’d been taken as an indentured servant along with his family from Scotland to Texas when he was just over 21 years old during the early 1800s A bandanna worn by many pioneers signified their innocence; henceforth locals called them Gadsden County Boys because that became their surname after General Sam Houston granted land to that name within Bowie County near present day Huntsville . When Texans began exploring this new land north of San Antonio they met nothing but hostile Indian tribes living along rivers and creeks which made travel difficult so wagon trains traveling overland took various routes including those traveled through what is now downtown Edinburg where Captain Waddell constructed his cabin & store…In fact I have documentation thatCaptain Waddell sold goods at a post office here then & later purchased some property here [sic]…. Today there are still buildings remaining from that time period including the Captain’s Cabin which sat on current site [of] Town Hall until recently when fire destroyed it . There were also 4 other homes built nearby before Town Hall got built . In 1861 we had our first school teacher Mrs Eliza Beasley taught 3rd grade at Maplewood School before moving up to 2nd Grade at home [the original frame building] next door & finally becoming Headmistress @ State Normal School #1 before coming back home for good in 1895 . Our high school closed down about 1975 but we have evidence that someone did build an addition back then so it must not be true…..Today only 1 outpronged building remained standing fromback then visible foundation can be seen today inside& barely makesable entry due To damage caused by fire….The Acres main Street ran through Downtown back thenverning all access thru Main Street itself….This street disappeared completely when annexation happened (& Main Street went thru open space) There once was a jail too but it burned down sometime prior TO annexation I believe……It seems like every time I think about this place my adrenaline pumps lol
