Edinburg is a small, rural town located in the Texas Hill Country. The population was 2,047 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Hudspeth County. According to the United States Census Bureau, Edinburg has a total area of 0.8square miles (2 km²), all of it land. The first permanent settler in what would become Edinburg was James Fenton in 1836. He built a log cabin on the banks of the San Jacinto River and named his settlement after General Sam Houston's home state, Tennessee. In 1838, Fenton married Anna Womack and they founded a farmstead called Prairie Mills near today's downtown Edinburg. By 1840, Fenton had erected two frame buildings – one for government services and another for his family – on Main Street which served as courthouse until 1850 when federal troops moved into Hudspeth County to suppress Indian raids. In 1851, Jno Henson arrived from Missouri with his family and platted what became present-day downtown Edinburg on land that he owned south of Prairie Mills Creek. The community began as an agricultural village with three stores and 50 residents; however, by 1865 it had grown to include five churches (one Methodist) and 150 homesick settlers from Illinois who abandoned their farms in search of better opportunities in Texas during the American Civil War Era (1861-1865). After Union forces destroyed most Eadinburg churches during their military campaign against Confederate forces under Jubal Early in April 1865, most residents returned home or relocated to other parts of Texas before Christmas that year according to local historian Vernon Ladd III. The post office at First Baptist Church reopened on December 12th 1865 after being closed November 30th due to lack of mail shipments from east Texans fighting for Confederate forces; however, business continued successfully at First Baptist until May 1st 1870 when mail stopped flowing because Union troops were bombing Houston city merchants' warehouses in retaliation for Confederate cannons being employed against Union soldiers besieging Fort Bend County。 thereby shutting down much of east Texan commerce within two months prior to Ulysses S Grant assuming command of Union Forces during the Mexican–American War (). In 1875/6 postmaster Adolphus Peake opened up Peake’s Drug Store opposite First Baptist Church which became known as “the Drug Store Corner” due its location adjacent to what is now Fourth Street between Bannister Avenue and Second Avenue NW.; however this store failed within six months due primarily to competition from hardware stores operated by Dutch Schultz & sons.) In 1901 Dr Temperance Abbott purchased 6 acres (2 ha) northwest corner of Third Street between Eastheimer Avenue NW & Elmhurst Avenue NW., site now occupied by Abbott Laboratories Incorporated; thus establishing Abbottabad Park which remains one of America's largest enclosed shopping complexesinois TodayAbbott Laboratories Incorporated employs over 4500 employees including over 600 scientists across seventeen states across five continents.). From 1902 until her death in 1966 Dr Abbott was president & CEO /CFO / Director Board Member Emeritusof Abbott Laboratories Incorporated). Edinburg, Texas is a town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 1,643 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Hudspeth County. The name "Edinburg" comes from English and means "place of the oak trees." The first settlers in what is now Edinburg were farmers who arrived in 1836. They built a log cabin on a bluff overlooking the Brazos River. The first post office was established in 1837 and was known as Brazoria. In 1839, the town became chartered as Hudspeth County and its present name honors EDWIN JONES, governor of Texas during the Mexican-American War and one of the signers of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848). In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell's army invaded Texas and burned all but one small community in Hudspeth County - Edinburg - resulting in many casualties among Union forces occupying that area. After the war ended, Edinburgh resumed its normalcy until World War II when it again experienced wartime destruction due to bombing raids by Japanese aircraft. In 1945, after years of reconstruction following World War II, Edinburgh reemerged as an economic center with heavy industry including aluminum production and much new housing development between 1950 and 1970. Today Edinburg retains its traditional values: strong agricultural economy; small businesses; active downtown business district; rich history dating back to pioneer days; excellent public education system with numerous museums and educational opportunities for children across several grades levels; reliable transportation options including buses to most major cities in CentralTexas
