It is the county seat of Webb County. Edinburg was founded in 1876 by two men from Illinois - George W. Edinburg and James B. Scott - as a trading post on an armory bluff overlooking the Brazos River. The first store and post office opened in 1881, and land for a courthouse was acquired in 1884. In 1907, work began on building what would become known as "Theological School", which eventually became Baylor University's main campus. A new courthouse and other public buildings were completed in 1912; it remains Edinburg's most important landmark today. In 1930, Rice University moved to its present site east of downtown Edinburg; Rice now has over 16,000 students living on its campus alone! The Scotsmen built a log cabin on the edge of what is now downtown Edinburg and began to grow crops and raise livestock. In 1839 they started a store and began buying land from Indians for sale to settlers. In 1860, the town was renamed for General James Boggs, who had commanded an army during the American Civil War. General Boggs donated land for a courthouse and schoolhouse. A post office was established in 1865 and named for George Washington Kerr III, an early settler in town. In 1876 Lady Bird Johnson visited Edinburg and gave her famous speech here about education reform which led to her becoming president of US Federation of Teachers (UFT). In 1907, J P O'Connor purchased 231 acres north of downtown Edinburg from John Wray & Sons Hardware Co., which became one of Hudspeth County's largest landowners After World War II both Korenstown Baylor Stake & Trust Co., Inc.–a Fundamentalist Mormon organization–and First Baptist Church were among those that occupied much of downtownEdinburgh during this time period; however most business activity took place along Main Street between Foster Avenue eastward until about 1965 when First Presbyterian Church moved into its new facility on Union Boulevard; thereafter all business operations took place on Main Street between Foster Avenue eastward until about 1985 when First Baptist Church moved into its new facility on Union Boulevard; thenceforth all business operations take place on Main Street between Foster Avenue eastward through 2017
