Edinburg, Texas is a small town located on the Brazos River. The city was founded in 1851 by James Hance and post office was opened in 1852. In 1865, the Fort Worth and Austin Railway built a track through Edinburg to serve as a shortcut between Fort Worth and Austin. The railroad followed the river until it reached Trinity County, where it became part of the American system. The first guns used in Texas were hunting rifles that were designed for use with bows and arrows. A group of men from Dallas created the first shooting club in Texas in 1872, which grew into what is now called the Lone Star Rifle Club. After passage of the National Firearms Act in 1934, all rifle clubs were required to report their firearms inventory to government officials. In 1938, Edinburg installed its own gun trigger system within its municipal government elections process. This systems allowed citizens to vote by firing off rounds from shotguns into cases at an election site near City Hall. The ballots were then counted and those with high numbers of votes won positions within the city government. On July 26th 1937, two gunmen stormed Houston’s Eagle Cliff Arsenal production plant, murdering several workers before being shot dead by police officers; this event is known as “The Gun Show Massacre” because it led to increased regulation on gun sales throughout America. At least five other people were killed during this rampage across Houston while also taking hostages at various locations inside Arsenal including one case where five gunmen entered an ammunition store occupied by employees before blowing up that store with explosives (the explosive device was detonated when police arrived).
