Edinburg is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, seat of Cameron County. The population was 553 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Cameron County and part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1827 by John Edinburg, a settler from Tennessee who had earlier relocated to what is now Cameron County. A year later, he married Maria Ramirez, also from Mexico and daughter of a Mexican father and an American mother. The Ramseys were among the first white settlers in what is now Cameron County, and they built their home on the present site of downtown Edinburg. In 1830, John Edinburg Jr., another son of John Edinburg Sr., arrived from Tennessee with his family to begin farming in what are now eastern Travis County and western Hudspeth County. In 1834, George Withers erected a log cabin near present-day downtown Edinburg as his farm headquarters for cattle sales and other purposes; he also donated land for a courthouse and jail near today's main square (then known as "the Square"). By 1840, Withers had become one of several early entrepreneurs in what is now central Texas who invested heavily in cotton mills that would transform this growing region into an important center for industrial production during the 19th century; these mills continue to be significant economic engines today.
