Edinburg, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas. It is the 9th most populous municipality in Texas and the 2nd most populous city in Austin metropolitan area with over 1 million residents. The city was founded on December 6, 1879 by James M. Eddy and his wife, Sara Lavell Eddy as a town near what is now considered downtown Austin. The name "Edinburg" comes from Spanish for "the place where rivers turn". The first gun parts to be manufactured in Edinburg were barrels and stocks made of hardwood and hickory by local blacksmiths working for local farmers. By 1892, firearms manufacturing had moved to the larger factory on Seventh Street which still exists today as Browning Arms Company Incorporated (BAIC). During World War I, Edinburg became one of the largest arms producers in the United States supplying munitions to both American and European allies. In 1945, after World War II ended, Browning Arms Company merged with Colt Firearms Corporation to form Browning-Colt Firearms Corporation (BAC). BAC continued making firearms until it ceased production on October 16, 1998 under Chapter 7 bankruptcy when its assets were sold off to private investors following a $2 billion loss during their eight years of operations[1]. Since there has been no major gun company headquartered in Edinburg since 1898,[2][3] many aspects of firearm manufacturing have passed down through families who have worked at these companies throughout history. One such legacy is that all handguns built at Browning-Colt Firearms Corporation are stamped with either "BAC" or "COLT" markings on each slide stop and barrel breechface; this indicates that they wereproduced byBrowning-Colafters Corporations Ltd., UK branch only - not Colt Manufacturing Co., USA branch as sometimes mistakenly assumed.[4]

The area now known as Edinburg, Texas was first settled by the Comanches in the 1820s. In 1848, the Mexican government ceded land to the United States in order to gain control of the Rio Grande. The town of Edinburg was founded on October 20, 1849 by James W. Hargrave and others at what is now its east side. The town grew rapidly and by 1860 had a population of over 200 people. Edinburg, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The population was 4,871 at the 2000 census. The first settlers in what is now Edinburg were cattle and horse herders who arrived in 1873. At that time, there were only a few buildings and no businesses. In 1901, the land that now makes up the town was surveyed and it was decided to name it after General George Armstrong Custer. The original town site was on the east side of Hudspeth County Road 6 near present day Menard Road. In 1902, voters approved the name change and construction began on the courthouse and schoolhouse which were completed in 1903. The first settler to live in Edinburg was Wm Henson who built a cabin on his lot in 1875. In 1916 local resident John Nance donated land for a high school which would later be renamed Austin High School. When Austin High School opened its doors for students on November 1, 1917 it had just 10 students enrolled although President Woodrow Wilson had given his address recognizing World War I as “a great moral problem”; he urged American citizens to get involved in helping fight this war effort by donating money or goods to charity organizations such as Goodwill Industries of America (GIA). As classes moved into their second year of operation things started to grow more complex as athletics became an important part of campus life with football being one sport summer program offered while other extracurricular activities rotated through like choral singing or debating club meetings/conversations during lunchtime before returning back to class during winter break so that not much energy remained available for academics during term time ( Vroman ). It wasn’t until 1933 when school board member Jolene Payne donated land from her farm off FM 836 next door to Third Street where she lived with her husband shorty thereafter that brick classrooms replaced straw bales used until then for instruction purposes along with new sidewalks and streets built especially for pupils at an estimated cost of $5 per student per annum (Vroman). With all these changes going on around him young Ernie Huffman didn’t have much choice but go along with them when he met Payne while working at Litton Foods Company across from Third Street Railway Station’s office circa 1935 Huffman recalls her telling him she had been driving around looking for a place to put up some schools since nearby Kerrville had one but they didn’t have room because there were already too many children living there originally erecting portable classrooms using pieces of lumber salvaged from dismantled railroad cars papered over with tar paper became very difficult due lack of sunlight penetration also kids got sick from all those diseases prevalent back then diphtheria pneumonia typhoid fever tuberculosis etc.). So finally we found our permanent home here today November 3rd 1936 . . . ."
Edinburg was founded in 1845 by General Sam Houston. The city grew rapidly due to its natural resources and status as the center of cattle culture in Texas. In 1948, Edinburg became the capital of the new state of Texas.
