Edinburg is a city located in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 11,439 at the 2010 census. The Edinburg Independent School District serves students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade. The history of Edinburg goes back to 1836 when it was founded as an agricultural town by John Wistar and others on the banks of the Trinity River. A post office was established in 1837 and changed its name to Edinburg in 1849. In 1870, two brothers named John Hays and James Hays opened a general store and woolen mill in what is today downtown Edinburg. They were followed by other settlers over the years, making up most of the present day citizens of Edinburg. In 1907, Hugh Crain purchased land east of downtown from David Starr Jordan for $2,000. He built his first home there and named it "Crain's Mill". In 1915 he sold all his land except for a small piece west of town which he kept until 1966 when he donated it to the school district. That same year also saw the construction of First Baptist Church which stands to this day on that property (now known as Westminster Presbyterian). A number of businesses have been located in or around downtownEdinburg over time including Firestone Tire & Rubber Company (founded 1914), Shipbuilding Corporation (1929), Coca-Cola Bottling Company (1930), Journeys Clothing Store (founded 1951), National Broadcasting Company's Texaco gas station/ snack shop (established 1957) and many more! The early years were difficult for Edinburg because it lacked any water sources other than creeks that flowed through nearby Hill Country hillsides.
