It lies on State Highway 77 about 12 miles (19 km) east of Austin and about 20 miles (32 km) southeast of San Antonio. The name Eagle Pass has been given to this location by its inhabitants for their seeing an eagle fly overhead during camping or travel through the nearby mountains. The first white person to set foot in Eagle Pass was Father José Altamirano who journeyed from New Mexico in 1853 and 17 years later founded what became known as San Antonio de Bexar Mission Station here. The settlement grew rapidly due to the opening of the famous Chisholm Trail which ran through southern Texas in 1871 and brought new settlers and businesses such as stores, hotels, cattle drives, mining operations and lumber mills. One of the most important events that took place in Eagle Pass occurred on October 11th, 1916 when United States Marines landed at Bullfrog Bay Naval Air Station just east of town while they were conducting Operation Neptune’s Spear during World War I. However, during World War II Eagle Pass experienced some tough times due to its strategic location at the junction of two major highways: I-35 and US 69. However, with help from local businesses such as Alamo Ranches Petroleum Company and Texaco Refining Company (later Chevron), EaglePass bounced back quickly after the war ended Thanks largely to population growth rates (which stabilizedthanks in part to federal stimulus money) that outpaced economic growth rates nationally during those years . The biggest development around this time came withthe construction of Interstate 35W which bypassed downtown in orderto connect all parts of Texas southward including Dallas/Fort Worth area with what would eventually become San Antonio . As this highway spanned across town residents realized how important their center had become withinTexanetropolisand began plans for expanded development which included residential areas ,commercial areas and even an airport ..
