The name Eagle Pass comes from the Apache and Comanche word "ái-yi-ka" which means "the place where they catch game." In 1876, the territorial government of Texas passed an act creating Hudspeth County. The first post office in Eagle Pass was established in 1881. In 1907, the town incorporated and began to grow. By 1914, it had a population of 3,500 people. During World War II, EaglePass was one of four American military airfields used by Japan to test new weapons and aircraft during their war effort against the United States. After the war ended in 1945, most of the growth slowed down as people returned to theirnormal lives.
