The name Eagle Pass comes from an observation by General Philip Sheridan that "the Eagle's Nest" was visible from nearby Eagleton Prairie. The first European to visit Eagle Pass was Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto in 1541. He named it San Miguel de las Casas after his friend and mentor Saint Michael who had been martyred at Teotihuacan. Mexican general Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna also passed through the area on his way to drive Spanish colonists out of Mexico in 1835. In 1876, when Hudspeth County was created, Eagle Pass became its seat. In 1907, when PresidioCounty was created, Falcon Heights replaced Eagle Pass as its seat because it lay within Falcon Heights' boundaries at that time. The two towns amalgamated in 1910 and still share their common ZIP code 92006 today. When Texas seceded from the United States in 1861, most of Hudspeth and Presidio Counties remained with Mexico until 1865 when they were re-asserted by President Abraham Lincoln as part of newly formed West Texas Ranger District No. 3 under Ulysses S Grant administration west of El Paso along the Rio Grande River Valley including parts of Webb and Presidio Counties which eventually became Dallas County (1871).

The first store in Eagle Pass opened in 1872, operated by Wm Moler and Bros., under the name "Moler's Store." In 1896, John Fenton built the first schoolhouse in Eagle Pass according to plans given to him by his predecessor as postmaster John Dyer from Fort Worth (now Arlington). On May 10, 1902, a general store and lumberyard were founded here by Harry Weisenthal with Wm Neely as his partner; it later became known as Weisenthal & Neale’s Furniture Mart. In 1907-08 an oil well was drilled in nearby Deer Park and this led to what would become one of Eagle Pass' most important economic engines: production of donated gasoline for automobiles started here in 1908 from an old Texaco station on Loop 1604 (later I-35). A movie set filmed at Eastwood Ranch in 1961 used land adjacent to Weisenthal & Neale’s Furniture Mart for scenes including a shootout between FBI agents trying to seize weapons from outlaw Jesse James during the Dallas Riots that year In 1978 Don Simpson leased 3 acres east of town which he turned into Republic Aviation Airport serving Eagle Pass until it closed down after years of heavy use when commercial jet travel began arriving there starting with Continental Airlines flights in 1995… After being bought out by Southwest Airlines operations continued through liquidation culminating with the closure of Republic Airways on December 8th 2003 finally ending over 100 years of business within agricultural service within Hudspeth County This included more than 350 employees who had their jobs cut loose when Republic Airways went out of business including many women who had worked there since prohibition days…. One legacy left behind by Republic Airways is the large number of replica airplanes still present at what is now Republic Aviation Airport today

In 1836, the Mexican Republic acquired temporary control of Hudspeth County from the United States after they were defeated at the Battle of Buena Vista. On November 6, 1836, Mexico ceded ownership of Eagle Pass to Ulysses S. Grant in exchange for his eventual Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican–American War.
