A mission station was established here in 1836 by Father Pedro Teixeira, and the name of the town changed to Eagle Pass after General Antonio López de Santa Anna's army destroyed the Mission San José near present day Austin on August 20, 1836. The Mexican–American War brought more violence and destruction to this small community; most of the buildings were destroyed or burned down in what would become one of America's largest ethnic cleansings. In 1861, during American Civil War efforts to secure supplies for Confederate forces marching through our nation's capital city (Washington D.C.), Major General James Hogg sent an outpost unit under Lieutenant Colonel John Buford across the Colorado River into Hudspeth County commanded by Captain George Waddell with orders to engage any Unionists encountered along its route. At about 8:00 PM on July 4th 1861 Buford discovered what he thought was an Indian camp located just outside of present day Eagle Pass; when he approached they opened fire which killed four men and wounded six others before Private First Class Harry Sibley rallied his troops and drove off their attackers rangeless for three hours until nightfall; then withdrawing without encountering any enemy camps or resistance that night returned back safely across the river bringing news of General Hogg's deployment northward as part of a larger Confederate offensive against Fort Worth). As Californios trekked southwardfrom Texas overland past New Mexico Territory towards California these events occurred southwest ofmodern-day Austin within today’s borders of Hudspeth County - thus beginning what has come be known as Anglo Texan history... In 1865 President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 6251 which ordered all military posts east of Houston be vacated because Union forces had moved into that area from central Texans including EaglePass following up on months long guerrilla warfare against Confederate forces besieged at Vicksburg Tennessee while Robert E Lee led a large army across southern Mississippi toward Richmond Virginia... The garrison at El Paso surrendered December 12 1865 with members amounting totalling 176 including Officers Major Isaac Newton and Lieutenants William Jorgensen (Captain) & Alfred Valentine Pemberton(First Lieutenant)... On January 15 1870 Congress authorized creationofthe RepublicOfTexas resultingintheestablishmentofEaglePassTownship... By 1880 EaglePass Township had grownto encompass an area comprising portionsofHudspethCountyand Travis County becoming one Municipality....By 1900 Censusitreached1,887 residentsmakingitoneofthelasttownsincorporatingAustinintheRepublicoftxaswellasFort Worth... It currently has a population estimated at 2,000 residents
