Eagle Pass, Texas is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Eagle Pass was founded in 1884 by J.W. Eagle and his brother Prentice Eagle as a small community on the banks of the Trinity River near where it now stands. In 1911, Eagle Pass became an independent city and was renamed after General James Ewing's ranch in Arizona Territory - Ewing City (now Phoenix) being located adjacent to the original city limits. The city boundaries changed again in 1953 when Hudspeth County was created and Eagle Pass became its first county seat. In 1925, A&P Stores Company opened a store in downtown Eagle Pass and began selling petroleum products from trucks on Main Street between First Avenue and Sixth Street. This began what would be an important industry presence for the town until deregulation of oil prices led to a decline in business during the 1970s and 1980s; however, A&P still operates a store today as well as several restaurants and gas stations within town limits dating back to 1885-1925. The current courthouse building was built between 1916 and 1921 by John Waddell for $10 per acre (the land cost $2 per acre). It replaced an earlier courthouse which burned down in 1915 while under construction by Hudspeth County Judge David Lubbock; Judge Lubbock himself suffered second degree burns during the build-out process which required hospitalization for weeks afterward. The new courthouse remains standing today but has been converted into office space according to plans prepared by architects firm Goodwin + Partners LLP with assistance from Historic Preservation Division of Dallas/Fort Worth Mayor Henry Cisneros's Task Force on Community Design & Development oftxAvenueMap #3(pdf). The county seat moved to Pecos in 1912. The population of Eagle Pass dropped from around 5,000 in 1880 to just over 1,000 by 1910 due to railroad construction and other factors. However, during World War II, the town saw an increase in population as war workers came to work on Project coronado in nearby Pecos. By 1950, the population had grown back to about 2,500 people. However, it declined again during the 1970s due to declining oil prices and a lack of industry within the city limits. By 2000, however, Eagle Pass had regained some population growth with a new high school being built and various businesses opening up within its boundaries. In recent years though, there has been a decline in popularity for both social activities (such as potluck dinners) and cultural events because Of economic problems within the city limits which have caused poverty among its residents
