A school was built in Eagle Pass in 1907 and renamed Griggs High School after Gideon Griggs. In 1951, it became Texas A&M University's Aggie Campus and remains so today. In 1957, the Webb-Porter Bridge over Buffalo Bayou was built across Buffalo River to connect Eagle Pass with Georgetown and Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library and Museum on the north side of the river near LBJ's ranch home (the bridge now carries US 59). The bridge also served as a bypass for Dallas during severe weather conditions that year; this event is commemorated by an annual road race around downtown Eagle Pass called "The Wash" run every September since then.
Eagle Pass is the county seat of El Paso County, Texas. The post office at Eagle Pass was established in 1881, and remained in operation until it was merged into El Paso in 1912. As a result of the Mexican-American War (1846-1849), which began on April 6, 1846, Eagle Pass became the site of one of the largest engagements between American and Mexican forces. The American force numbered more than 100 men while Mexico had only 8 soldiers. After three hours of fighting, an American victory resulted in the capture by Americans of two cannons and several horses as well as four Mexican prisoners.
