Eagle Pass is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The community was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1876 and named after Eagle Peak in Utah. The first post office in Eagle Pass was established on December 15, 1876. By 1890, the community had a population of 350 people and a school. A railroad station was built in 1903, but it closed down because of financial difficulties. In 1912, an oil well were drilled near Eagle Pass and production began soon afterward; this helped to revive the economy of the community. In 1935, new development moved into the town; this included an airfield which served as a staging ground for bombers during World War II. The airfield closed down in 1946 but remained inactive until it reopened as an airport in 1973. In 1960, the community (along with neighboring Hanceville) became part of Lyndon Johnson's constituency when he was elected to succeed John F Kennedy as president of the United States; Johnson maintained his residence there until his death six years later. During his time as President, Eagle Pass hosted several high-level government meetings including those pertaining to Vietnam War strategy and peace talks between North Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh and American president John F Kennedy (the two would also meet at nearby LBJ Ranch). After Johnson's death in 1969, power passed from Congress to Vice President Hubert Humphrey until Richard Nixon took office who immediately announced plans to demolish all remaining structures within the town limits - most notably what remains today of Center Street businesses - although some buildings still stand within sight of Main Street despite their demolition efforts: one example being a restored old church known locally as "The Gilded Age" located just east of Airport Road off Highway 3809/Highway 3808/3807). During Nixon's presidency significant changes occurred within Hudspeth County due largely to statehood issues surrounding that county - eagle pass gained its own municipality on February 14th 1971 becoming one with 3 Voting Districts viz.: East Side 2nd Ward (west side of Airport Rd.), Central East Side 1st Ward (east sidenext door to Chamberlin Rd.), South Central East Side 2nd Ward (south sideof Airport Rd.) Additionally both wards are combined into one by City Council on April 16th 1978 under Mayor Tom Neal who ran unopposed . As mayor Tom Neal successfully pushed for annexation resulting from City Council vote(s) annexing all 3 wards making EaglePass full city status effective November 10th 1978 finally bringing about end to long dormant annexation negotiations back home with original owners requesting incorporation back into Hudspeth County since they no longer economically benefited from city services
