Eagle Pass was founded in 1881 by Hudson's Bay trader and landowner George Armistead. The name "Eagle Pass" came from the fact that the area was where Native Americans used to pass through on their way to the south. In 1912, Eagle Pass became an incorporated municipality with a population of about 1,000 people. The city had its start when a sawmill and flour mill were built there in 1916. The city was named for General John Fetterman who fought in World War I and later served as United States Ambassador to Japan. The economy of Eagle Pass is primarily agricultural with some manufacturing activity also taking place. The primary industry here is agriculture but there are also some small businesses involved in this sector such as a grocery store and mechanics shop. There are no major highway interchange points within close proximity to EaglePass so transportation within the community is by bus or truck only. Eagle Pass is a small town in Webb County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Eagle Pass is located in the eastern corner of Webb County on Interstate 10 and its eastern border is the US-Mexico Border. The town was founded by pioneers John Day and his brother Jameson in 1884. In 1907, the townsite of Eagle Pass was donated to Webb County by A&P grocery store founder George W. Cline. The first post office in Eagle Pass was established in 1907. On July 12, 1912, a tornado touched down near Eagle Pass and leveled several homes and killed five people before dissipating over Edwardsville; damage totaled $5,000. On January 15, 1921 (the day after President Warren G Harding became president), an unprovoked attack on a stagecoach stopped traffic on I-10 about two miles east of Eagle Pass; four men were found dead with their throats slit from behind as they sleptnearby their horse troughs at milepost 959 North of the old town center; three horses were also killedin the violence which followed when passengers tried to escape without being robbed orattacked; one person was seriously injured as a result of this attack but he fully recovered within days. By 1945 EaglePass had grown to 2,500 residents with 150 business establishments including 20 banks and six restaurantsand 30 stores catering to farmers markets outside of town limits; two cotton gin plants had been built nearby during that time frame while other businesses includeda hotel/motel (1925), an airplane hangar (1929), Radio Corporation Of America transmitter station(1930) and three truck farms dating back to 1917 when local farmer J C Goodyear started storing surplus fuel for his ranchresides adjacent to today's Old Humble Oil Refinerysite across U S Route 6 from where crude oil was extracted until it closed operations in 1957). In 1953 county Judge Don Fenton designated land north of Route 66 as parklandto be known as "Eagle Pass Park". Today there are still several residences located near milepost 959 along I-10 southbound just eastof the park boundary line
The Eagle Pass area of Texas was first settled by the Apache and Comanche people in the 18th century. The original name for the area was "Taos" because of its high mountain ranges. In 1839, the Mexican government ceded this area to the United States as part of Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The U.S. military built a fort at Eagle Pass in 1844, and a small town grew up around it. In 1861, during the American Civil War, General Zachary Taylor attacked Fort Donelson near Eagle Pass and lost many men; this event is sometimes referred to as the Battle of Eagle Pass. Many Texans fought in both sides of the war, including Congressman John Fenton from Dallas who served in Union Army troops at Eagle Pass.
