Eagle Pass is a small town in the county of Hudspeth, located in the U.S. state of Texas. It was founded by prospectors in 1876 and has been a stopping place for travelers on the Chihuahuan Desert since that time. The first ammunition store in Eagle Pass opened its doors in 1881 and soon became known as one of the most important businesses in the area. The Ammunition Company was founded by John Withers and his brother Jameson Withers in 1892. The company was responsible for manufacturing all types of ammunition including artillery rounds, machine guns, pistols, rifles, shotgun shells and more. The company continued to operate until it merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company effective January 1, 1899. At its peak, Winchester Ammunition had sales totaling $2 million per year! Today, Winchester Ammunition is a part of American Outdoor Brands Inc., one of America's leading rifle manufacturers. The economy is based largely on agriculture, particularly cattle ranching and horticulture; although there are some small businesses that have arisen over time. The largest employer in the town is the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center which employs about 100 people. A large part of Eagle Pass' history can be found within its local community group - The Eagles who have kept their community alive for more than 120 years!
