The first people to live in what is now Duncanville were Native Americans who hunted and gathered game near present day downtown. In 1845, Scottish settlers named John Auld bought land around what is now downtown from the Cherokees for $5 per acre. In 1868, American pioneers arrived seeking to find new land west of Houston. They chose Duncanville because it had a road leading to it from their settlement at Waco on the Brazos River. The town name comes from General James Dunlap’s unit (6th Texas Cavalry) which was stationed here during the Mexican-American War. On July 9, 1870, Duncanville incorporated as a city under Texas law with a population of 100 citizens and six officers including Postmaster Elisha Beecher . The original brick buildings in downtown were built by local merchants for their businesses near US 71 and FM 620. By 1907 there were only two buildings left standing in downtown – both used as public library branches today! properties surrounding Downtown began being developed as housing tracts starting in the early 1920s when oil production increased around nearby Fort Worth concurrent with increasing demand for workers in nearby cities such as Dallas and Fort Worth. Today many homes still remain within these boundaries although much has changed since those days including Randolph Drive becoming called “Old Town” due to its historical importance dating back to this time period!

Duncanville was founded by Scots immigrants in 1836. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the banks of the San Antonio River and its access to lucrative cotton fields. In 1852, Duncanville became the county seat of Hudspeth County. In 1870, it was renamed for General James K. Polk after he was elected president. As a result of its growing population, Duncanville began to build up a strong economy that supported local businesses and social customs such as festivals and marriages. By 1907, the town had over 20 churches, 10 schools, and 2 hospitals.
