However, due to economic decline and suburbanization, Duncanville’s population increased only marginally until 2000 when it reached 15,362 residents. This growth has been largely due to annexation of neighboring towns and villages since 2000. The history of Duncanville began with a Presbyterian church that was built on land donated by James Duncan and his wife Margaret. The first services were held at this church on October 7th, 1881. On July 2nd of that year, Duncans purchased 640 acres (2 km²) east of the present-day town center from John Hogg for $600 plus costs associated with building a stockade around the property which they named “Duncanville” after themselves or their families. The townspeople quickly started building shops and homes as they developed around the new church and mill complex on what is now known as Main Street between East Third Street and East Second Street. By 1882 there were four stores in operation: two grocery stores operated by Mrs. Auld (now Dunn), one druggist/pharmacist store operated by J F Rankin (now Rankin), a post office which served as an insurance agency for local farmers on Main Street between Third Street and Fourth Street where mail was delivered each day from Edinburgh Castle before being sent via stagecoach to Galveston County; and three blacksmiths who worked at nearby Hermitage Forge usingither horses power or hand tools provided by friends or family members of miners living nearby or working down at Hermitage during off hours while men went up into Dickinson coal mines located several miles east along IH 35W . In 1902 James Duncan died leaving his estate valued at $3 million dollars including cash advanced to His widow Margaret for her use during her lifetime plus future benefits if he had children not born within six years following his death without any male heirs apparent so she could receive them according to Scots custom etcetera etcetera etcetera etcetera…. Thus ended centuries long tradition among Scots Presbyterians in Texas that an heir presumptive should automatically become parent upon father’s death regardless of lack thereof….. Accordingly one daughter was born alive but another eventually married an American citizen who also had children although both parents never received anything from their father based solely upon usage of Scots custom!!! So much for traditional Scottish Rite succession laws!!!

The town became a cotton and cattle town during the early years of the American Civil War, when Union forces were stationed in the area to protect supplies carried overland from Confederate territory. After the war, Duncanville prospered as a dry goods and cattle town until World War II, when it emerged as one of Texas' largest shipbuilding centers. The industry declined in the postwar years, but Duncanville has continued to thrive as a small-town community.
