Duncanville was founded in 1892 and named for General James Dunlap. It was incorporated as a village in 1907. In 1951, it became a city. In 1998, it merged with neighboring Arlington to form the current city of Duncanville. The town is located on the Red River near its confluence with the Trinity River. According to the United States Census Bureau, the settlement has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 2,531 people, 848 households, and 527 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,397.1 people per square mile (540.4/km²). There were 990 housing units at an average density of 553.8 per square mile (213.2/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1%. It lies on the bank of the Trinity River, about 15 miles west of Fort Worth and 30 miles east of Dallas. The first settlement in what is now Duncanville was made by Tom Hargrave on December 1, 1858. A post office was established here on January 1, 1860, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1893. The name "Duncanville" derives from John Duncan who settler arrived from Scotland in 1824. He built a cabin near what is now Main Street and named it after his home country which he had briefly visited while living near Abilene,. The first school in Duncanville opened its doors to students on October 12th, 1861. This early educational institution was known as the “School House School” until 1865 when it became the “First Presbyterian Academy” under the ownership and management of Mrs. Lillie McCulloch who operated it for nearly 25 years before her death In 1907 it reverted back to its original name “First Presbyterian Academy” which still operates today as one of four secondary schools within Keller County public Schools system In 1886 two brothers by the name of Prentice founded an agricultural Implement manufacturing business that became known as Prentice Bros., Incorporated . They were followed by their brother Roy Ewing who also began manufacturing agricultural implements around 1911 . Roy's son Leroy took over this company after his father's death in 1942 and ran it until his retirement in 1984 In 1932 Wm J Noble bought out Roy Ewing's share with remainder going to Wm J Jr.'s widow Nellie Upon Wm J Jr.'s death Nellie sold all rights to production to Allied Signal Corporation which continued operations until 1984 In 1954 Mabel Mae Brown purchased entire interest from Allied Signal Corporation . Today Mabel Mae Brown Presidio Independent School District provides education for grades K-12 along with technical training programs for local businesses including fire departments
