TheDuncanville Rifle Club was organized in 1907. The first arms club in Duncanville, Texas was the Home Defense League, which was formed in 1909. In 1912, the Duncanville Rifle and Shotgun Club was chartered and began meeting at the old post office. The first rifle competition took place on October 25, 1912. In 1916, the Duncanville Pistol Club was chartered and began meeting at the old Masonic Hall. The first pistol competition took place on November 5th of that year. In 1922, both Rifle Clubs merged into one to become the Duncanville Gun Choke Association (DGCA). That same year saw the debut of a new shotgun design called the “Tallboy”. This weapon featured a long barrel with a short stock and had a round buttstock for storage under your arm. It became very popular among outdoor enthusiasts in Duncanville because it could be carried anywhere without fear of being lost or stolen. Since its inception as an organization, DGCA has sponsored numerous rifle competitions including state championships at various levels; produced local magazines which feature articles about gun choke shooting; and given away rifles to members who complete specific challenges such as NRA Shahwahid Competition shoots or Trap meets
Duncanville is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 5,343 at the 2010 census[2]. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex and is located about 40 miles (64 km) south of Dallas and 30 miles (48 km) north of Fort Worth. The first people to live in Duncanville were Native Americans, who hunted game and collected plants and berries in the area now known as Duncanville. In 1878, John Wesley Hardin, Sr., built a flour mill on his family's farm near what is now downtown Duncanville. A post office was established in 1884, and by 1888, Duncanville had become an incorporated town. The townspeople built a log courthouse in 1893, which served until it was destroyed by a fire in 1923. The new courthouse was built on land that still surrounds the old structure today. In 1907, Edwin Hargrave opened the first retail store in Duncanville when he opened Hargrave's Department Store on Elm Street. The store became known for its wide selection of items from clothing to food products. In 1916, Clyde Culp bought Hargrave's Store and began selling gasolineand other supplies from his truck stop-type business called "Clyde's GAS & SUPPLY". In 1951, Clyde Culp donated two acres (1 ha) adjacent to his store to create what would become Patton Park.[3] In 1949, Jock McAllister opened Jock's Barbecue restaurant at Patton Park; it became one of America's most well-known barbecue restaurants.[4] Other notable businesses include KFC/Chik-fil-A since 1985,[5] Barnes & Noble since 2007,[6][7][8] PGA Tour golf course since 2004,[9][10] Stroud Drugs since 2013,[11][12][13], Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company since 1953,[14] [15],[16]and First Baptist Churchsince 1984.[17](See also: List of tornado victims in Texas.) Duncanville is a small town in the rural Brazos Valley of Texas, United States. The population was 5,057 at the 2000 census. Duncanville is located on U.S. Route 281, about 18 miles (27 km) east of Austin and 12 miles (19 km) south of San Antonio. The first settlers in what is now Duncanville were two families from Kentucky who bought land near present-day Stonewall Jackson Boulevard and Loop 1604 in 1853. The original name for the town was "Oak Park". In 1876, John Pemberton organized a cattle drive through the area and named the new settlement after his father-in-law, General Andrew Johnson Pemberton. The community had a post office from 1880 to 1893 but no school until 1918 when it opened under the auspices of Dallas Independent School District No. 10. In 1925, Duncanville became one of eight towns within Arlington County when that area was created as part of a state government reorganization which includedince Texas became an independent country following World War I. In 1934, Duncanville incorporated as a city and remained so until its annexation by Arlington in 1975; since then it has been governed by Arlington City Councilmember elections only with Mayor approval being needed for most major decisions not considered de facto city status due to lack of voter support or mayor veto power over other issues such as zoning changes or budget appropriations). Duncanville was founded in 1879 by the Duncan family. The town was named for General James A. Duncan, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as a U.S. Congressman from Texas. The town became a major cotton center during the early years of the 20th century, and its residents were influential leaders in Republican Party politics. In 1922, Duncanville was renamed to honor Admiral John P. McCain, Jr., leader of World War II's Pacific Fleet.
