Duncanville, Texas is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Duncanville is named after General James Dunmore and was founded in 1868 by John Pemberton and others as a railroad station on the Central Pacific Railroad. The townspeople donated land to make up the current municipality. The first settler in what would become Duncanville was John Pemberton. He set out from Sacramento, California on July 4, 1868 with his family and three horses to found what would become Duncanville on Eight Mile Creek east of present day Fort Worth. At its founding, the community consisted of twenty-seven people who built homes around a log stockade that served as their courthouse and jail. In 1870, when construction began on the Trinity Railway Road (now I-35), Pemberton saw an opportunity to connect Dallas with Austin by means of a rail line running through his community. Accordingly he contributed $5,000 towards construction of this important transportation artery which opened up new opportunities for local businesses and farmers alike. In 1915 native son Elmer Hill became one of America's leading bankers when he founded First National Bank in Duncanville – one of only two banks established within city limits north of downtown Dallas during that time period (the other being Citizens National Bank). Over ensuing years Hill continued to lead First National Bank into adulthood until his retirement in 2006; during that time bank assets grew more than fivefold! Today First National Bank continues as one of GreaterDallas' most successful private companies honored with numerous awards including being selected as a "Leadership Award" winner by Forbes magazine in 2013! The town was named after General Andrew Jackson Duncan, a hero of the Mexican-American War who had served as a Brigadier General in the Union army. In 1905, the town passed an ordinance providing for public education and recreation. The first school in the town opened its doors to students on September 4th, 1905. The towns growth continued during World War II as many businesses closed their doors due to wartime shortages. During the war years, Duncanville became known as a munitions dump because of its large quantities of ammunition and other materials. After the war ended, business activity dried up again and the population decreased until it reached its low point in the early 1970s when it resurged again thanks to new investment from developers interested in returning the area to its prewar prosperity. The population has since declined once again but recent surges have led to increased development around town with plans for new businesses, homes, and cultural attractions drawing people back into this historic community
