Dumas, Texas is home to the world’s largest collection of firearms and ammunition memorabilia. This is especially true for the handguns and rifles that have been used in shootouts, law enforcement operations, and other gunfights throughout history. One of Texas’ most famous museums, the Dumas Museum of Firearms & Ammunition has over 10,000 items on display. This includes weaponry from all around the world as well as unique Dumas memorabilia such as antique pistols and shotguns. One of the more interesting pieces on display at the museum is a replica of an 1836 revolver that was used by Sam Houston in his fight with Mexico. The replica was made from beautiful old gunsammunition with parts from dozens of different pistols and revolvers that are currently on exhibit at the museum. Other notable items on display include a Winchester Model 1886 rifle that belonged to General Tom Brown (the first U.S. Chief Justice), an American Civil War cannon known as “The Big Baby”, and a Mexican Frontier Dragoon sword dating back to 1840!

However, by the early 1970s, Dumas was experiencing significant economic decline because of its location and lack of access to major transportation arteries. In response to this problem, the city of Fort Worth offered Dumas a $10 million investment in order to help revive the community and spur economic growth within it. Today, Dumas enjoys a resurgence as a small-town center with active businesses and an important role in McLennan County's economy. Its citizens are proud of their history and appreciate all that has been done for them over the past few decades.
