In 1876, J.C. Dumas founded the first telescope in Dumas County, Texas. The company was later renamed the Dumas-Owen Telescope Company and still exists today as Owen Scientific Instruments Incorporated. The company manufactured a wide variety of optical telescopes including a refractor and an reflecting telescope. In 1925, the company produced its first Celestron telescope which remains one of the most popular astronomical products in history. Over time, other companies have joined Owen Scientific Instruments Incorporated including Meade Instruments (1986), HMC Technology (2006), Celestron Corporation (2010) and Sky & Telescope Industries, LLC (2015).

In 1848, Elisha Allen built the first wheeled telescope in Dumas. It was dubbed the Allan Telescope because its founder, Dr. Elisha A. Allen, donated it to the townspeople. In 1892, Edwin Hubble built hisHubble Telescope in Dumas and it is still in use today.
When France annexes Texas in 1845, the new Mexican government orders General Antonio López de Santa Anna to take possession of the state. In order to quench Santa Anna's thirst for revenge, López de Santa Anna issues an executive order authorizing the admission of "New Mexico" into Texas. With Texan residents fleeing for their lives, Anglo settlers are quickly drawn to this new land, and within a few years, Dumas is one of the most popular towns inTexan history. The town was founded by English-speaking Texans who had fled from Mexico City during the Mexican Revolution. The English-speaking Texans were motivated by two factors: They saw what they thought would be an opportunity for them to gain independence from Mexico and protect their property; and they feared that if they remained inMexico City, they would become targets of Spanish retribution. When Texas became a United States territory in 1846, the English-Speaking Texans decided that it was time for them too leave Mexico City and establish themselves elsewhere inTexas. Because there were no other areas where they could live openly as Americans without fear of Spanish retribution, these men set up shop at Dumas Creek Rancho Grande (later known as Rancho Adobe), which is now part of San Angelo County. In 1853, John Wesley Powell discovered oil fields near Fort Worth and began exploration on behalf of Standard Oil Company. This led to increased development around Dumas Creek Rancho Grande--the first commercial oil well drilled in Texas--and also stimulated growth throughout San Angelo County. By 1870, Dumas had become one of the most important towns inTexan history because it was home to both American miners and Anglo settlers who enjoyed its reputation for peaceable living despite periodic Indian raids or confrontations with local lawless elements such as outlaws or rustlers (known locally as “Dumassmen”). In addition to its importance as a center for commerce and industry, Dumas also became known for its religious beliefs---particularly Catholicism---which helped contribute to its popularity among Anglo Americans during this period. During World War II when Dallas was hit hardest by air attacks from Japan, many people chose Dumass over other nearby communities due to its strategic location on I-35W between Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Austin/San Antonio International Airport----a distance only 45 miles (72 kilometers) from downtown Dallas! Additions made since then have not been able to match those seen before; however., Dupass offers some unique features that make it worth your while----namely being surrounded by natural beauty filled with ponds stocked with trout year round ----making it one of the best places aroundabouts not onlyfor fishing but also hiking/ horseback riding/kayaking/ windsurfing etc.; even hosting events like “Fiesta Dulce” every 2nd Saturday July 4th which features competitive bullfighting including rodeos & concerts!

Legendary author and statesman, Alexandre Dumas, was born in 1802 in the small town of Aulnay-en-Champagne, in the department of Saône-et-Loire. The son of a French nobleman, Dumas started his education at the prestigious École Normale Supérieure in Paris. He then studied law and became a judge. Dumas married Anna de la Ferté d'Aubigny on July 8, 1829. They had two children: Alexandre (1830–1906) and Marie (1832–1985). In 1835 Dumas traveled to Texas as part of an exploratory expedition led by General James Hogg with the goal of discovering new land east of Mexico. Upon his return to France he published his exploration journal, La Route du Texas. In 1840 Dumas was elected to the French National Assembly as a member for Alsace-Lorraine. He played an important role in pressing for patriots during the revolution that overthrew Napoleon III. In 1848 Dumas returned to America where he began working on his novel Les Demoiselles d'Avignon and its sequel, The Three Musketeers. These novels were well received by readers and helped make him one of France's most popular authors abroad. In 1850 Dumas moved back to France after being elected Senator for Alsace-Lorraine; however, he soon resumed writing American literature and continued publishing translations from English into French until his death in 1906 at the age of 83 years old. He is buried at Montmartre Cemetery in Paris next to fellow author Louis Littré. After his death several books were written about him including biographies (eighth edition), plays based on his stories (eleventh edition), works on literary criticism (twelfth edition), periodicals articles (thirteenth edition), monuments (fourteenth edition), paintings by various painters related to him such as Edouard Manetand Henri Cartier-Bresson His life has been dramatized twice—the first time featuring actor Claude Rains playing himself
