Dumas is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,715 at the 2010 census. Dumas is on the banks of the Brazos River and it is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The name "Dumas" originates from French meaning "fathers". After General Antonio de Santa Anna's surrender at Sam Houston's army's base near San Jacinto in 1836, Mexican revolutionaries took control of Texas and renamed most of Hudspeth and Williamson counties as Santa Anna (or La Fayette) Counties. However, Dumas County remained under Mexican rule until 1850 when it was ceded to the United States by Mexico as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1846 Republic of Texas forces led by Sam Houston failed to retake Austin from Mexico after a three-year siege. In response Houston ordered his cavalry general John Crain to march on Dumas and burn all Englishman who were found there. A group including some American citizens retreated into Round Rock before burning all their stores and homes in what became known asthe Battle for Round Rock orBattle for rancho Grande. In 1861, after Confederate forces liberated Austin from Union occupation during the American Civil War, many Texans moved westward into what was then Hudspeth County seeking new opportunities in a land that had been opened up by Manifest Destiny policies championed by Ulysses S Grant during his presidency. Most notably, George W. Bush Sr.'s father, George H.W._Bush inherited RanchoGuajardo from his maternal grandfather Ennis Bogan which he sold to David Ayer in 1984 for $2 million dollars making him one ofthe richest men in Texas history outside Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan areas). Since its incorporation as a town in 1879 it has experienced rapid growth with over 3200 residents living there according to 2010 census results alone! The highlight for residents has always been its annual cowboy rodeo which draws more than 40 thousand people each year!

Dumas, Texas is a small town located in Hidalgo County, Texas. The population was 714 at the 2000 census. It lies on the banks of the Brazos River, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Amarillo and 30 miles (48 km) northwest of Dallas. The first settler in Dumas was George Waddell in 1859. He and his family moved from Illinois to this area and founded a farm named Waddell’s Mill on the Brazos River. In 1865, J.C. Bigham purchased the mill from Waddell and it quickly became one of the largest cotton mills in southeastern Oklahoma Territory. The mill closed its doors for good in 1922 but reopened in 1984 as Dillard Cotton Mills Inc.. In 1881, John Pemberton established an oil refinery on the site of present-day Dumas after purchasing land along the Brazos River from Robert Ewing Sr.. The refinery produced gasoline and other industrial products until it closed in 1951. In 1924, Sherman Riggs built a large ranch house near Dumas which he used as his headquarters during his years as president of Texaco Oil Co.. This structure still stands today and is known locally as “Riggs House” or “The Ranch House” because it was once used by various ranchers who lived there such as Roy cottonwood and Don Baylor. Riggs also donated money to many local charities including First Baptist Church which has been active since 1886; Dumas High School which opened its doors on September 15, 1925; Stroudsburg Presbyterian Church which was organized in 1912; and Methodist Episcopal Zion Church that served Baptists until 1942 when they joined Interdenominational United Brethren religion at that time). In 1966, Dumas residents met to discuss creating a new government for their county when they realized they had no representation on Hidalgo County Court System! They eventually formed a Constitutional Convention to create a new government with themselves as head elected officials- this would become known as “The Dumatzes” later! After several failed attempts over many years culminating with only three meetings being held due to lack of interest or volunteers, finally on November 3rd, 1974 Governor Dan Patrick called an election for all members of Hidalgo County Court System with individuals not having to serve consecutive terms like currently required!! Assemblemen were then elected ex officio by Order Of Judicial Conduct Commission!!! On January 1st 1975 effective immediately all court records became open!! A paved courthouse square now stands vacant across from Davis Elementary School where community events are now hosted
In 1836, the Republic of Texas was founded and the area around Dumas became part of the fledgling state. The town continued to be a small stop on the stagecoach trail until after the Civil War when it grew rapidly in population as farmers moved into what is now central Texas. By 1870, Dumas had become a large cotton-producing community with over 1,000 residents. In 1907, local citizens voted to change their name to Austin in honor of former Governor Sam Travis.
