In 1850, he married Josefa Ortiz and they moved to San Antonio. There, Vicente began working at the Alamo National Monument as an employee of the American Museum. He also became involved in local politics and served on various committees. Finally, in 1859, he became Mayor of San Antonio. Vicente Dumas died in 1865 after serving two terms as Mayor of San Antonio. His death marked the end of an era for Mexican Americans living in Texas. Many believe that Dumas' legacy is one of strength and determination; during his time as Mayor, he successfully fought against discrimination by fellow Mexicans and won many legal rights for Mexican Americans.

Dumas, Texas is a small town located in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It was founded by James Dumas and his brother-in-law John Carpenter in 1859. On July 16, 1861, General Sam Houston announced that Fort Bend County would become part of the new state of Texas and Dumas became the county seat. The first post office in Dumas opened on November 15, 1865. The name change to Medina County on December 31st of that year; it is still used today. The first church in Dumas was built in 1869 and dedicated to St Joseph. There are also two old cotton gin buildings (one dating back to 1881) which are now used as apartments or businesses. In 1907, a mill called "Lunenburg" started production and quickly became one of Medina's leading employers. By 1920 it had produced over 350 tons of cotton each week; however due to World War I it shutter down for lack of funding and reopened three years later with lower capacity but increased production rates thanks to government support including a loan from President Woodrow Wilson himself. In 1941 during World War II munitions manufacturers localised their plants around Medina County when war materiel shortages developed following Germany's invasion of Russia; this led to an increase in industrial production throughout all Southwestern US counties during wartime with consequent job growth across local companies such as Textron Aviation & Defense (TAD), Lockheed Martin Aircraft Co., Raytheon Missile Systems Inc., Browning Arsenal Ammunition Plant etc.; these companies would remain dominant through both peacetime expansions into other industries (e.g., food processing) and postwar layoffs until consolidation brought about dramatic reductions in staffing levels by 1990s associated with neoliberalism while rural areas lost out either through declined employment opportunities or even depopulation/urbanization processes typical under neoliberalism itself
