Dumas, Texas is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,914 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first settlers in Dumas were Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Banville and his wife Marie Antoinette Girard (née Chapron). They arrived in 1827 and named their settlement after François Dumas, an officer in the French army who had fought at Waterloo. After a brief stay they returned to France. In 1846 two brothers, John Athey and David Wetheralds purchased land east of Dumas from some Indian chiefs for $10 per acre. In 1850 they founded the townsite of Whitneyville on their lands west of Dumas. They named it after their father-in-law James Whitney who had settled there in 1839. On February 6, 1865 John Athey died at age 80 years; David Wetheralds followed suit less than two months later at age 82 years old. Dumas became an agricultural center due to its fertile soil and proximity to railroads that linked Houston with points south and west. metal processing began early on in the twentieth century with smelting operations taking place on nearby Mount Vernon Hill while cattle raising continued until around World War II when tanks started coming into use which led to a rapid decline in production over time

Dumas is a town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,641 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Texarkana–Bryan Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dumas was founded in 1881 by Irish immigrants. The town name is derived from "Dúmàs" meaning "place ofocks." The first residents were John and Jane McMahon who arrived in 1881 and set up a log cabin on what is now Main Street. A year later they moved to another location but they named their new home after French general and future president Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, Emperor of France, who had been born there in 1814: Dumas Place. In 1903 the original post office was established at Dumas; it remained operational until it merged with nearby Texarkana in 1907. In 1916 the community went dry due to lack of water storage facilities; however, this did not stop people from coming to live there because there were many opportunities for agriculture products such as corn, hay and cotton). In 1933 an addition to the main school building resulted when an old cotton gin was donated by local farmer James Peele which became known asgraded School #1 (later renamed Junior High School). During World War II the town saw its biggest influx of refugees as Japanese Americans were rounded up during World War II and sent to concentration camps throughout America. By 1945 most of them had been released but some remained behind including many children who would grow up here eventually becoming professionals or teachers like San Francisco 49ers linebacker Edwin Jackson (1924-2008) or Dallas Cowboys Hall of Fame running back Ezekiel Elliott (1994-2018). After years of growth Dumas finally achieved its goal of being incorporated as a municipality in 1959; it held its first meeting that year under the name “Dumass incorporation” before reverting back to its current name one year later after adopting an official seal made out of green felt with yellow stars inside a blue oval background. The motto for Dumass today is "Unity Through Diversity". The economy has historically been based largely on agriculture although some manufacturing has recently begun taking off such as shoes produced by local company Herman Miller Ltd., which opened its newest factory just outside town limits in 2009 opposite Central Market
The town of Dumas in Texas was founded by the French in 1836. The town was named after François Duchesneau, a captain in the French army who had served in Texas during the Mexican-American War. The first white settler in Dumas was John Bird, who arrived in January of that year.
