Dumas is a town in Hood County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville–Decatur, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dumas was founded by General Antonio López de Santa Anna on December 15, 1824 as San José de los Reyes del Valle. In 1892, the railroad company Central Texas Railway built a line from Wichita Falls to Decatur and then south to Dumas. The depot served as the first stop for tourists who journeyed down the railway from Wichita Falls to what became known as "The Old Town". Dumas experienced rapid growth following World War II when hundreds of military personnel returned to town after serving in war zones all over the country. In 1948, Dumas annexed nearby Pecos City and formed the Town of Pecos with its own government and school system. In 1957-58, Dumas again annexed neighboring Pecos City and formed a new municipality which would become one of many towns in Hood County during that decadeization process called "germanization" because most rural hoods were being devolved into municipalities by state legislators looking to reduce their impact on county government spending. During that time period much progress was made in improving public education within Dumars limits including construction of three schools (Preparatory School #1 (now George Huggins Middle School), First Baptist Church Elementary School Annex #2 (now White Sands High School) and finally Eastview Middle School) which opened in 1960 after years of construction; renovation/upgrading of two other schools (Hood Junior High School Annex #1 now Greenbrier Intermediate School and McKenzie MiddleSchool annex now Hickory Ridge Early Childhood Learning Center); addition of an ice cream parlor; Hollis Park; Stoneware Building erected in memory of Mrs. Ada Mae Butler who died suddenly while working on it in 1966; Shoe store opened adjacent thereto namedboot & buckle shop which became permanently renamed Boot & Bangle Shop later also becoming a shoe store before it closed circa 2000 This type operation lasted until about 1986 when ownership transferred back to original owners who continued operations as Boot & Bangle Shop until 2003 when it reopened under new management as Star Shoes Incorporated
