Dumas is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Corpus Christi–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Dumas were Spanish missionaries in 1821, although they only established a mission there for a year before departing. The town was founded on December 12, 1836 by John Sayer Dumas and his wife Margaret Cummins Dumas as an agricultural community near what is now Fort Worth. The name of the original town site may have been inspired by the Latin word "dunamis," meaning "a dunghill." On July 8, 1861, Confederate General Braxton Bragg marched through Dumas on his way to Brownwood to attack Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant. A crowd of local residents came out to greet him and drummermajor David McMurtry played martial music while he walked through their streets chanting "Viva la guerra!" (Long live war!) Aftermath of this event led to many businesses closed down due to fear for their safety. Confederate Brigadier General Alvin Culp's brigade arrived in time to prevent any violence from taking place and both leaders went back into town without incident. As a result of this disturbance no damage or casualties occurred within the town itself but outside buildings several people were arrested and some property was damage including $1 worth of goods lost during the march away from Dumas that morning In 1865-1866 construction began on Fort Worth's railroad line which would eventually connect Fort Worth with Houston via Dallas-Ft Worth Road. This event helped spur development in nearby areas such as Dumas where stores started popping up selling everything from food to tools and equipment used by soldiers on active duty throughout texAS In 1896 general James Forrest Angel landed at Galveston Bay with orders from Ulysses S Grant not To Leave No Man Behind! Forrest wanted all cavalrymen who could leave their mounts behind so if needed they could be quickly reinforced should hostilities escalate again during Reconstruction period In 1907 when railroads became available new homes started being built along Trinity Avenue just east of Main Street these houses had three stories!!!! When developers bought those properties they raised their stakes even higher giving rise to today’s shopping center which fronts Main Street
