In Dumas, Texas, there is a history of optical equipment. In 1895, the first glass-faced microscope was created in Dumas by Dr. George Eastman and Dr. Edwin Abbott. The town's first movie theater opened in 1916 and featured a single projector with an experimental liquid crystal display (LCD) screen. In 1924, the first cinema in Texas premiered features with sound through an acoustic system composed of speakers on the roof of the old post office building. During World War II, ammunition production increased in Dumas as troops fought in Europe and North Africa. Ammunition manufacturers needed to produce large quantities of precision optics for artillery and other military use. One such company was Ballistix Corporation, which manufactured high quality optics for Ballistics Research Laboratories at Fort Worth Army Air Base (FAB). In 1965, Ballistix merged with Nikon Incorporated to form Nikon Corporation; however, due to antitrust laws enacted during the war years, BALLISTIX remained separate from Nikon until 1974 when they were combined into one company under that name again. The town of Dumas, Texas was founded by General Antonio de la Hoz in 1836. The community was named after the French general and hero of the Battle of Trafalgar, Louis-Auguste de Lafayette. The first store in Dumas was founded by James P. Fenton in 1849.
