Dumas is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,183 at the 2010 census. Dumas is located on the border of both Hudspeth and Parker counties and straddles the Red River. It has a post office with ZIP code 77536. The community name comes from French d'un moulin (a mill), which means "from one mill" or "from one stream". In 1881, A.P. Hill founded the first store in Dumas and it continued to be run by his family until it closed in 1957. The first school opened in Dumas in 1865 and it remains operational to this day as Humble School District No.#1's only high school. Dumas began as a cattle ranching community after local farmers discovered oil shale deposits near where the now-defunct Big Thicket Oil Field was located today. By 1907, there were over 100 Anglo Americans living in Dumasa along with assorted Native American Tribes who also ranched here including the Kiowa, Comanche, Lipan, White Sands Apache and Mohawk Nations who all shared access to abundant water resources that allowed for intensive agriculture and irrigation development hereabouts beginning about 1870s when pioneer James Fenton arrived from Illinois early 1800s looking for new land to settle following his purchase of two thousand acres (8 km²) of what is today known as Fenton Park from Sam Houston within weeks of its founding on November 3rd 1836 - just two years after Houston became governor of Texas! The area around present day Dumasa had been surveyed by Captain John Crain during Jesse Metcalfe's March 1st 1836 trip across Central Texas en route to explore nearby Wichita Hills west of Fort Worth! The formal annexation by Tarrant County occurred on December 12th 1878 following a vote by county commissioners concurrent with an earlier decision made by Governor William McKinney that week based upon surveys prepared by surveyor General Elisha Pearce which showed that most Texans north of San Antonio desired incorporation into newly created Tarrant County! This event marked an important milestone not only because Dumasa would become part of new rural Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan area but also because many residents herewho had voted against annexation formed the nucleus around which future central business district growth would develop - underscoring again how democratic institutions can play critical role in creating economic vitality! In 1912 George Wernham bought out Hill's interest in Storey & Sons Hardware so that Wernham could open his own hardware store; this led to Wernham Hardware becoming one of America's most successful hardware stores dating back more than seventy years! Ditto for Jenson Bros Grain Elevator which became another massive success starting out small serving customers at its original location off FM 1520 just east of present day Main Street; eventually expanding into other agricultural commodities including flour, rice, beans etc.. Dumas, Texas is a town in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Dumas was founded in 1857 by General Butterfield and named after Jean-Baptiste Dumas, father of Alexandre Dumas. The first post office in Dumas was established on July 5, 1857. The name change to Dumas on October 15, 1859 because of objections from other towns in McLennan County about the spelling of their names. The original town plat was filed on March 7, 1860 and it described a location that included what is now the eastern edge of Dumars Road. In 1861, Major John Wacoal moved his family to Dumars after purchasing land there from Jesse Jameson for $1 per acre. He had come to Texas as a cavalry officer during the Mexican–American War andsaw opportunity for ranching when war ended. On December 10th 1861 he sold 640 acres (272 ha) including present-day downtown Dumars to Akins Hogg for $10 per acre ($ million today). In 1865 Akins Hogg donated land east of present-day Main Street between Buffalo Bayou and Uptown Boulevard to build what would become known as Baylor University Park; this donation remains one of the largest gifts in university history. On February 11th 1865 General Order No 2 issued by Confederate Governor JF Buell called all remaining Texans into arms against Union forces invading Texas via Arkansas River crossings below Mount Hood near Fort Worth; all men were ordered to leave their homes statewide within 72 hours or be put into military service with no return home until relieved by Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee.. This event is considered the turning point in Texans' support for secession from the United States...On April 9th 1865 General Order No 12 announced that all Texans were free to choose between Union or Confederate states if they wished but if they chose not to become soldiers then they were subject to deportation back home without any right to appeal or compensation...All adult males over 21 years old must report at Fort Worth’s “Housemartin Barracks” within three days or face arrest and/or imprisonment...Dumars became an unofficial border town due its proximity to both Mexico City and Austin before these areas became fully integrated into American culture." The first school built in Dumars was Old Mission School which opened up in 1858 upon receiving funding from Methodist missionaries headed by Rev Dr John Cochran & Mr Sallie McCulloch among others In 1862 Major Wacoal donated land east of present day Main Street between Buffalo Bayou and Uptown Boulevard To build Baylor University Park which still stands today Akins Hogg donated land east of present day Main Street between Buffalo Bayou and Uptown Boulevard To build what would become known as Baylor University Park
