The name of Dumas, Texas is derived from French explorer and general Jean-Baptiste de la Bataille who discovered the area in the early 1800s. De La Bataille's expedition had been investigating an Indian village that he believed to be located in what is now Midland County. He explored portions of what are now Travis, Williamson and Wise counties before reaching the site where he discovered the village. At first it was thought that this village was actually a Spanish ville (town) founded by colonizers in their attempt to establish a trading post along the Sam Houston Trail. However, upon further exploration it was realized that there were no Spanish settlements in this area at that time. In 1836, De La Bataille's party returned to France with news of this Indian village and its occupants. After his return, Dumas became one of the first towns in Texas to welcoming African Americans as residents.
