In the early 1800s, a group of men in Dumas, Texas began to make and sell firearms with swivels. Dumas, Texas is a small town in Starr County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. Dumas is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The name "Dumas" comes from the French word "duh" meaning "place." The post office in Dumas was founded on December 30, 1872. In 1903, the first school opened in Dumas and served grades K-8. In 1907, a one-room schoolhouse was built and served grades 9-12 until it burned down in 1951. In 1952, a two-story school building was erected and serves grades PreK & Kindergarten through 8th grade today. In 1972, the first church in Dumas opened its doors to serve both Catholics and Protestants. One of the most popular attractions for visitors to DumAS are its annual golf tournaments which have been held every year since 1978!

This helped to promote Spanish as an official language in Texas and increased enrollment in Spanish-language schools statewide from about 5 percent to almost 30 percent by 1923. In 1924–1925, a major flood swept through Dumas; damage was extensive including entire blocks destroyed or rendered uninhabitable due to high water levels caused by heavy rains and floods that month alone. The 1927 election resulted in a Republican victory over incumbent Democrat Tom Green who had been elected as governor three years earlier; this marked the first time since Reconstruction that a Republican had held office on statewide level in Texas (although Redeemer Presbyterian Church had previously won two state legislative seats).
Dumas was founded by the Comanche Indians in 1836. The town was named after General Santa Anna and it became a stage stop on the Santa Fe Trail. In 1845, Dumas was renamed to Austin and began to grow as a manufacturing center for munitions and other products. The city experienced significant growth during World War II when it employed over 100,000 people in industries such as shipbuilding and aircraft production. Austin has since become an important cultural and political center in Texas, with several large universities located within its boundaries.
