Dumas, Texas is a small town in southeastern Texas located on the banks of the San Jacinto River. The population was 1,403 at the 2010 census. Dumas is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The town was founded by Mexican immigrants in 1836 as Pecos County seat. In 1845, it became part of what is now Travis County after it was separated from Pecos County by an act of the Congress of Mexico. After annexation by Austin in 1876, Dumas became part of Austin and remained so until its incorporation into Dallas in 1907. Dumas has a rich history dating back to its founding as a Mexican settlement. It was here that Antonio López de Santa Anna met his future wife María Antonia del Carmen Escobar y Alvarez, who would become one of the first Anglo women to live permanently in Texas. The Lópezs also founded a school and rancho (ranch). A post office called Dumas was established in 1840 and served until 1865; it was moved to its current location about two miles east of downtown in 1885. A lumber mill opened near Dumas after General Sam Houston’s army destroyed nearby plantations during the Battle for San Jacinto on July 6,1846; this mill continued operations until 1895 when it closed due to competition from more recent mills within Austin proper. In 1901, pioneer Hilda "Hilda" Denton opened her grocery store at 601 Main Street which remains one of Dumars' most popular tourist destinations today. The store's namesake food item - huitlacoche - can still be found fresh off the farm at local farmers markets throughout early summer throughout central Texas! One hundred years later, some residents are still holding onto their memories from before those days such as “the old timers who could remember when there were no cars or buses or cell phones . . . we just took walks around town." One example about how technology has not interfered with life much for these longtime residents is that they continue to use their radios – especially FM – for communication purposes despite having gone digital since 2006! Dumas, Texas is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 10,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1881 by lumbermen prospectors John Fenton and George H. Smith, and named after General Lafayette Dumas who fought in the Mexican-American War as a volunteer soldier from East Texas. The town quickly grew to become one of the largest settlements in Midland County and soon became known for its fertile soil and cattle herds. In 1907, Dumas incorporated as a municipality with a population of 20 residents. By 1915 it had reached 100 residents and annexed neighboring towns of White Oak and Palestine to form a single municipality with a population of 300 citizens. In 1925, Dumas passed an ordinance granting woman voting rights which helped spur growth in the city during World War II as many women left their homes to serve in war industry or help found local businesses. The post-war boom saw growth continue as new construction erected throughout downtown Dumas including several thousand housing units built between 1951 and 1957 alone! After years of decline due to various factors such as oil depletion (a result of tight regulation on production), Expo '68 brought about new economic opportunities for Dumas through tourism (primarily centered around the exposition's international visitors center) which has continued to be an important aspect of the community's economy today

Dumas began as a community on the east side of the Brazos River and grew around the cotton plantations that were developed there. The town center is located near the Brazos River and it has a courthouse, school district, post office, several businesses and two churches.
