Dumas is a town in Bastrop County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tyler–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Dumas was founded in 1836 by Captain John Galt and his family as a small community on the banks of the Neches River. In 1851, Dumas became an independent county and in 1857, it merged with Bastrop County to form this current township. The first post office in Dumas opened on November 3, 1836, and was called "Cottonwood". The name was changed to "Dumas" on December 12, 1837. On May 5, 1860, the U.S. Census reported that Dumas had a population of 404 residents; it had grown to 1,633 by 1870 when it joined Bastrop County. The townships of Bastrop and Goodnight were formed from parts of Dumas Township on March 4, 1909; these two townships would later be consolidated into one municipality on January 1, 1926 (amalgamation based upon changes made to the Texas Code). The original name for bastrop county was Huntingdon County untilMarch 4th when all counties within this newly created government were renamed after Confederate generals: Dallas-Fort Worth(1861), San Jacinto(1865), Austin-Round Rock(1867), Galveston-Houston(1871), Cameron (1875) & Monterrey (1912). On September 15th 1924 James Fenton Postmaster General wrote:"It has been my opinion that there should be no change made in either spelling or place names which are familiar to our people hereabouts." After much discussion among all concerned citizens including many who lived near both spellings they voted unanimously in favor of continuing with "Dumass" as the only acceptable alternate spelling for DumASTSpoRt."
