Dumas is a city in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 24,531 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1881 by Scots-Irish immigrants, and named for General Andrew Dumas. The largest concentration of Scots-Irish in Dallas County is located in Dumas. The first settler to come to Dumas Creek was John Redmond. He came aboard the USS Constitution on October 20, 1848 and landed at what is now Dumas Ferry Landing. On October 25 of that year he erected a rude cabin about two miles from the creek's mouth on what is nowState Highway 157 (now US 75). A few weeks later he built his second cabin close by on land owned by Amos Bateson and James Fenton. From this cabin early settlers gathered sap, berries and other fruit for their winter clothing; next spring they harvested potatoes which were then baked into bread or boiled with butter to dryness. After harvesting their crops they would move along the creek until arriving at another cabin site where they would build anew or share an existing one until finally settling down in one spot for the winter months. In December 1849 Redmond set out from his homebuilt Cabin #2 with six others - all men - intent on locating new homes within range of Fort Worth so as not to miss out on government grants given out annually to towns within 10 miles of Ft Worth for building public works projects such as roads and schools%. They reached Eagle Lake just before Christmas but could not go any further because snow lay waste parts of central Texas during their journey! Redmond's group returned home after spending three months exploring various points around Eagle Lake before returning back to Eagle Lake December 23rd 1850 en route to Fort Worth where they applied for additional government grants which had been distributed among settlements within ten miles of Ft Worth! This attempt by Redmond and his fellow pioneers may have been successful had it not been for weather conditions which caused them great difficulty travelling through snowdrifts throughout much of November 1850 including crossing over Dawson Creek near present day Arlington Heights without being able to break through! When finally reaching Ft Worth late that month they found out that most residents still lived inside thefortifications! In addition to its role as a stopover on Stagecoach Road during its early years Dumas also became known as "the place where oil well rigs were unloaded". In 1916 Apache Oil Field discovered oil thereand production began immediately making it one of Texas' leading oil producers until 1971 when pollution problems led abruptly to its shutdown. Today only a small percentage remains undiscovered beneath surface due largelyto cultural issues associated with hydraulic fracturing operations nearby
