Dumas, Texas is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas that is located in the Hill Country of central Texas. The population was 1,879 at the 2010 census and it is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The name "Dumas" comes from Spanish meaning "fortress" or "hill." It was given to the community by General Antonio López de Santa Anna who named it for José Dumas y Costilla, one of his commanders in Mexico during the Mexican-American War and later governor of Coahuila and Chihuahua. It has been said that early settlers were farmers and cattle ranchers but within a few decades they had become entrepreneurs in real estate development, trucking, farming, manufacturing and other businesses. Dumas made its mark as an important center on Interstate 20 when it became a major transportation artery linking Dallas with Fort Worth and Houston through what is now Kaufman County. In recent years, however, some residents have objected to this fast-growing suburb being developed adjacent to their homes near Lake Travis which offers excellent views of downtown Dallas skyline and parks like Turtle Bayou Park. Today's residents are descendants of those who arrived in 1836 when Stephen Fenton founded Fort Worth as a military post on Rancho San Marcos east of present-day Dumas after helping to win independence for Mexico from Spain at Taos Pueblo. When war broke out between Mexico (the Central American country under Spanish rule) andTexas over boundaries delineating land grants made jointly by both countries following independence from Spain, most Texans migrated westward toward Dodge City thinking annexation would take care of them - instead annexation created more problems for Texans living east of McKinney Ave., including Dumas where many people saw no future for themselves if their home county became part of Oklahoma

Dumas was a small town in Texas that experienced several moments of dramatic change in its history. The first major event happened when the cattle drive from Santa Fe passed through Dumas on their way to the railheads at Wichita and Beaumont. A group of men, led by James Hogg, discovered what they thought was a wild animal and killed it. This incident is considered the beginning of the end for Dumas as a town. The second significant event occurred on December 1, 1881 when lawman James C. Bowie came to Dumas with orders to kill all alcohol-related people in the area. Bowie had been ordered by General Antonio Laredo to take action against any towns that did not toe the wagon on prohibition. When he arrived, there were only 8 residents living in Dumas and most of them were drunk or high on bootleg whisky. Bowie confiscated all of the liquor and threw it into jail where many of the townspeople were already incarcerated for other crimes such as vagrancy or larceny. It wasn't until after Bowie's death that things changed for Dumas and its citizens. ThroughBowie's example, many began to learn about law enforcement and how important it was for society as a whole to maintain order. In addition, many young men who had seen Bowie in action during his years as an officer started joining him in efforts to keep Dumas safe from crime and drunkenness. This new generation of leaders worked together To continue making improvements to both the local economy and public safety while also resisting outside influences which may have threatened their community's stability."
