Dumas is a town located in the U.S. state of Texas, about 25 miles (40 km) south of Dallas and 30 miles (48 km) east of Houston. The population was 5,906 at the 2010 census. Dumas is named after General Sam Houston, who fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as president under President James K. Polk in the early 20th century. In 1824, she donated a large quantity of Binoculars to the University of Texas at Austin. The first binocular factory was built in Dumas in 1830 by Amos Kendall and his brother-in-law, Ebenezer Morse. By 1836, there were ten businesses manufacturing binoculars in Dumas.
Dumas is a small town located in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2000 census. Dumas is part of the Amarillo–Odessa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Dumas Township was Rufus H. Dumas, who arrived in 1846 from Illinois. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Brazos River and named it "Dumas". In 1851, John W. Denton moved his wagon train into what is now township and platted it as Dumas Township. The first post office was established in Dumars on July 4, 1852. A store and school were built there in 1865 by James Browning. In 1870-71, local farmers raised hay for the beef cattle that were being grown nearby by Doniphan and other settlers in present day Potter County; this gave rise to the name "Beef Bend" for where these animals were getting their feedings during those years- near today's downtown Dumars. Slavery did not exist here until after Texas declared its independence from Mexico on November 6, 1822; however early white inhabitants likely used Indian slave labor to till their land as well since there was no market for white labor then and slaves could not be sold or driven away without retribution or violence (see: House Bill No. 9). By 1850 most of central Johnson County had been claimed by Texans through Manifest Destiny policies favoring American settlement over Mexican territory gained during Mexican-American War campaigns; this included land grants to some area ranchers such as John Wesley Hardin (1836-1920), Jernigan Houston (1835-1910), Daniel Webster (1797-1865), James Fenton (1800-1892) and others including Augustus Chapman Baker who founded Coryell County about two miles west of present day Austin proper at Quanah Lake adjacent to Slaughter Bayou west of Brushy Creek which served as rancho boundary between himself and Hardin until Rancho Santa Anna boundaries were reorganized circa 1880 following Anglo efforts to integrate Apache/Mexican lands into one contiguous unit under Uygur leadership with resultant benefits for both groups resulting primarily from irrigation projects initiated by Eastman Kodak Company prior theretoSome later residents include current mayor Ronnie Earle along with Historic marker markers marking locations of pioneer homes like Hidetaka Miyazaki’s 2nd wife Emiko Iwata’s birthplace east side Brushy Creek junction old homestead site etc... Dumas is a town in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Dumas is located on the edge of the Edwards Plateau and on the banks of the Trinity River. It has been home to farmers since before independence from Mexico, and its economy remains based on agriculture. The first post office in Dumas was established in 1876. In 1861, Mexican-American José Antonio Hidalgo was fatally shot by Austinites as he rode his horse into town for supplies. A local legend says that one bullet missed Hidalgo by inches and hit another man instead who died as a result. This shooting inspired James Fenimore Cooper's novel "The Old West" which takes place in Dumas at the same time that it does in Mexican Independence Day celebration (1821). In 1871, John Wesley Powell founded the First Baptist Church of Dumas with $5 from his father-in-law Sam Houston. For many years, this church served as a meeting ground for various conservative groups within Cameron County along with other evangelical congregations such asMethodism and Presbyterianism which had come to prominence during Reconstruction following America's Civil War (1861-1877). The post office closed in 1903 due to changes occurring throughout Texas including statehood; however, mail continued to be delivered through an old stagecoach stop known as "the crossing". In 1907, local ranchers organized what became known as the Cowboy Rancher's Association which later became LBJ Ranch after Lyndon B Johnson bought it from its original owners in 1964. After World War II began and troops moved into nearby Fort Bliss(), Palacios opened up about 30 acres (12 hectares) of open range land adjacent to Fort Bliss for cattle grazing operations beginning around 1945 with some structures still standing today including a cow barn dating back to 1912 when it was part of Palo Alto Ranch (). With help from then Congressman Lloyd Doggett (),umbletowns surrounding Dumas were developed into gated communities complete with water towers () while small businesses grew along side Interstate 10 (). Today there are still several functioning farms within minutes' walk of downtown while shopping centers have sprung up near Interstate 35 close to major highways including IH10/I-35 interchange etc., making Dumas an increasingly diverse community with many residents involved both locally and nationally in business or professional fields.
In 1836, Sam Houston was elected the first president of the Republic of Texas. He was a successful general in the Mexican-American War and won the title of "The Lone Star State". In 1845, Houston became governor of Texas after winning the election against James K. Polk. The war with Mexico ended in 1846 and Houston's term as governor came to an end. In 1850, he re-elected himself as president and served for another four years before retiring to his home state.
