Dumas began developing as a stop on Stagecoach Road during the 1840s when people started traveling westward from Houston along that highway. By 1880, Dumas had become an important railroad junction due to its location near both Humble Oil Field (later ExxonMobil) and Midland Railway Station (later Midland Airlines). In 1899, it had reached its current size with 375 residents and ten stores . During World War II, many military personnel stationed at Fort Bliss nearby moved into Dumas after beingibelized there at Camp Bowie near El Paso in 1942-1943. This led to the development of several small businesses including clothing store Jiggs’s General Store which opened in 1945; restaurant Litton’s Bordello where troops cooked meals; hardware store Hardware & Hardware warehouse; post office established 1914; First Baptist Church which served as chapel from 1916-1918; lumberyard Wadenbaum Bros.; Masonic Lodge #1 which met monthly at Masonic Hall since 1881 ; first school building erected 1912 which served as gymnasium until 1926 before becoming a library; second school building erected 1922 which served as high school until 1951 before becoming an annex for county courthouse subsequent demolition In 1999-2000 (the early 21st century), changes occurred within Medina County that have impacted Dumas most notably through annexation by El Paso counties of unincorporated parts of Hudspeth County eastward along FM 2222 between Comal Springs Road (now US 281) and Interstate 10 southward . Dumas, Texas is a small town in Vernon County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Gulf of Mexico and is northwest of Corpus Christi. The first settlers in Dumas were private citizens named Fenton, Cook and Waddell who arrived around 1836. They founded the community on a shoal of barge logs they had been able to cut down themselves. The name Dumas was given to them by General Andrew Dumas during his military campaign against Mexican forces at Palo Alto (1846). A post office called Dumas was established in 1851, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1887, John Aikens opened the first store in town. The store became a general mercantile business with an extensive line of groceries and supplies before closing its doors for good in 1912.
