Donna is a small town in Texas that is known for its cattle. The town was founded in 1881 by James and Sarah Donelson. The Donelson family ran the ranch until it was sold to Harry Hays in 1934. Donna has a population of around 1500 people. The town is located on the banks of the Buffalo Bayou, about 25 miles north-northwest of Houston. It is bordered by Live Oak, Texas to the east, Tomball to the south, Eldridge to the west and Rockwall to the northwest. Donna’s name comes from Dutch meaning “place where cows are milked” or “farmstead near a stream”. The first settler in Donna was Andrew White who arrived in 1881. In 1907, John Ewing moved his family from Eldridge and established himself as a farmer hereabouts. He died in 1960 leaving three daughters: Lois (born 1912), Estelle (1916) and Donna Mae (born 1935). Upon Mrs Ewing’s death in 1984, her daughter Donna succeeded her as head of the household with full authority over all aspects of life within the ranching community including voting rights and management of finances which she continued until her retirement in 2006 when she became an Emeritus Professor at San Antonio State University teaching courses on American history, women's history and Texan culture
