Donna, Texas is a small town located in the Hill County seat of Jacksonville. It was founded in 1892 by homesteaders who arrived from Illinois. The town grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s as railroad tracks were built through the area. In 1907, when Donnacona Peak was discovered, the community named their peak after it. The Donna Gun Club was organized in 1911 and has been meeting continuously since then to shoot targets at various ranges across the state. The club currently has over 100 members! When the railroad arrived, Donna became a popular stop for travelers on their way to Wichita Falls or Fort Worth. In 1907, Donna became a municipality with a population of about 150 people. In 1916, it incorporated as a city. By the end of World War II, Donna had grown to over 2,000 citizens. Today, it remains an agricultural community with ranching and farming activities providing most of its income. Donna has been home to many important events in its history including the founding of Baylor University in 1902; the battles fought during World War I between American forces and German forces; and the construction of Interstate 35 which passed through town in 1957. Additionally, most notably, there have been several tragedies that have occurred within its borders: the death of John Lennon after being hit by a car while walking across FM 2036 near his childhood home;[1] more recentlyales such as girlie bars (now defunct) situated around FM 19604 that led to local protests against them in 2007;[2]and numerous floods that have taken place throughout recent years due to heavy rainswater runoff from nearby hillsides
